Position Overview

A.I.S., Inc. (AIS) is a leading scientific services organization dedicated to supporting maritime operations that require adherence to environmental regulations, as well as gathering critical data for various governmental bodies along the U.S. coastline.

Core Responsibilities:

The Northeast Fisheries Science Center (NEFSC), Social Sciences Branch (SSB) is engaged in applied economic and sociocultural research focused on the utilization and governance of both commercial and recreational fisheries, protected species, and marine ecosystems. This research connects economic and socio-cultural factors to the management impacts of marine resources in the North Atlantic region. The SSB is also involved in regulatory development and evaluates the implications of proposed and finalized fishery management strategies. To effectively execute these responsibilities, the team must collect diverse data from fisheries stakeholders, analyze this information, and disseminate it to policymakers and the public. AIS is seeking a qualified economist to contribute to the SSB's efforts.

Key Duties:

The selected candidate will engage in:

  • Modeling and Decision Support: Development of decision support tools, bio-economic models, integrated ecosystem models, fishing vessel profit/cost models, angler behavior models, seafood market and trade models, aquaculture models, and assessments of fisheries economic and social impacts.
  • Social Science Research: Conducting assessments of economic benefits and costs arising from changes in ecosystem conditions and management strategies, evaluating policy options, predicting shifts in benefits due to environmental events or policy changes, and creating economic and social indicators for evaluating fishery performance.
  • Data Visualization Development: Creating web-based tools for data visualization aimed at commercial and recreational fishing communities, including automated reporting tools, fact sheets, maps, and infographics.
  • Data Management and Analysis: Performing data processing, spatial trend analyses, and imagery analysis for comparative assessments of fishing-related performance indicators, alongside the development of geospatial production and database modeling techniques using innovative technologies.
  • Research Dissemination: Sharing economic and sociocultural research findings through outreach initiatives such as fact sheets, infographics, and web platforms, and participating in professional conferences focused on ecosystem service valuation and integrated ecosystem assessments.

Compensation: The compensation for this role will be hourly and negotiated based on the candidate's experience. This is a full-time position, and AIS offers a comprehensive benefits package that includes health and dental insurance, vacation, and sick leave.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will possess a Master's degree in Natural Resource Economics or a related discipline and have experience in:

  • Engaging with community organizations that have local insights into environmental justice and the impacts of climate change.
  • Conducting multiple national, regional, or state-level surveys concurrently.
  • Program planning and management within a collaborative team environment.
  • Establishing performance metrics and milestones.
  • Collaborating with diverse interagency teams.
  • Committing to open science practices that enhance transparency and reproducibility.
  • Working independently while managing time effectively.
  • Adapting to rapidly changing priorities.
  • Exhibiting strong attention to detail.
  • Demonstrating excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Engaging with marine fisheries information programs or similar scientific initiatives.

Preferred Qualifications:

A Doctorate in Natural Resource Economics or a related field is preferred.

Travel Requirements:

Some travel may be necessary for collaboration with regional offices, laboratories, and fishery management councils, as well as for presenting research findings at conferences.
