Job Summary:
The Mechanical/Hydraulic Design Engineer at Spudnik Equipment Company is responsible for designing hydraulic systems for agricultural equipment that plant, harvest, transport, and handle potatoes and other crops.
Key responsibilities include developing hydraulic systems, hose routing, and schematics for agricultural equipment, designing equipment and components using provided requirements, and ensuring equipment safety and quality by calculating and confirming stress in critical design areas.
The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field, well-developed knowledge of mechanical principles and applications, and excellent troubleshooting, diagnostic, critical thinking, and analytical skills.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develop hydraulic systems, hose routing, and schematics for agricultural equipment.
- Design agricultural equipment and components using provided requirements.
- Ensure equipment safety and quality by calculating and confirming stress in critical design areas.
- Troubleshoot problems on existing machines using feedback from sales staff, customers, service technicians, production personnel, and management.
- Present design solutions/options to the project team and/or upper management and find the best solution for Spudnik.
- Utilize CAD design systems such as Automation Studio and CAD to design and maintain schematics, harness, and hose routing systems.
- Communicate with internal and external customers effectively and professionally.
- Create, maintain, and provide complete and accurate documentation of designs, including schematics, prints, diagrams, quality check sheets, and bills of material.
- Specify the final assembly process for successful equipment production.
- Redirect efforts in projects or project focus due to customer or production needs.
- Work closely with management members to keep a clear focus on company goals and objectives.
- Work in a team environment with little or no supervision.
- Maintain a safe, organized, and clean work environment.
- Fulfill team member absences.
- Promote the company's core values: integrity, respect, commitment, quality, innovation.

Qualifications:
- Possess a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
- Well-developed knowledge and understanding of mechanical principles and applications.
- Basic knowledge of electric and electronic schematics.
- Background in the agricultural industry preferred but not required.
- Excellent troubleshooting, diagnostic, critical thinking, and analytical skills.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Ability to read and interpret instructional drawings and schematics.
- Ability to effectively work with CAD systems, spreadsheets, word processing documents, and other applicable computer systems and software.
- Ability to travel frequently on day trips and occasional overnight trips, up to 20% travel.
Machines and Equipment Typically Operated:
- Basic clerical machines including computer, printer, adding machine, telephone, fax, etc.
- Other machines or equipment specific to departmental or facility needs.
Typical Physical Requirements:
- Medium work involving climbing, handling, talking, repetitive motion, crouching, walking, stooping, pushing, pulling, lifting, kneeling, grasping, and visual acuity.
Typical Environmental Conditions:
Worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions and temperature extremes. May have temperature changes due to working inside a shop. At times, noise is sufficient to cause the worker to shout in order to be heard above the ambient noise level. Includes a variety of physical conditions such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places. One or more of the following conditions that affect the respiratory system or the skin: fumes, odors, dust mists, gases, or poor ventilation. There is air and/or skin exposure to oils and other cutting fluids.
