String Conductor

Ravinia is seeking a highly skilled and passionate String Associate Conductor to join our team. As a key member of our Sistema Ravinia program, you will be responsible for leading string rehearsals and sectionals for elementary and middle school students, promoting musical excellence and social growth.

This is a part-time, hourly instructional employee position that averages 6-10 hours per week. You will work closely with our Program Manager and Artistic Manager to create innovative curriculum and pedagogy, and implement shared ideals.

Responsibilities include:

• Leading string rehearsals and sectionals, incorporating music theory and promoting musical excellence
• Collaborating with the Sistema Ravinia team to create innovative curriculum and pedagogy
• Developing lesson plans that promote social and musical growth
• Co-facilitating weekly instructor team discussions with Artistic Manager
• Participating in faculty professional development sessions
• Supporting daily logistics, including recording attendance and student transitions
• Communicating student behavioral, musical, and social challenges with administration and artistic management
• Fostering student empowerment and facilitating the holistic education of each child
• Conducting regular informal and formal assessments of student musical growth

Qualifications include:

• Demonstrated ability to lead and conduct large groups of children
• Knowledge of beginning to intermediate instrumental fundamentals, pedagogy, and theory
• Enthusiasm for El Sistema and its philosophy of social change through music
• Interest and ability to be a motivational mentor and role model for students, parents, and community
• Superior interpersonal skills

Education and Experience:

• Strong background in conducting, string repertoire, curriculum, pedagogy, and music education at the 4th-8th grade level
• Experience working with young children, youth orchestras, or in the El Sistema music education model
• Bachelor's degree in music or 2-3 years related work experience
