The 8South unit comprises two 24-bed surgical wards dedicated to the care and management of adult patients requiring hospitalization for pre and post-surgical procedures and recovery from trauma. The unit primarily handles cases related to colorectal, bariatric, urology, plastics, gynecology, gender affirmation, ENT, oncology, and general surgical interventions.
As a Registered Nurse on the 8South unit, you will be responsible for the application of the nursing process and the provision of patient care tailored to this specialized population.
- You will administer medications and therapeutic agents essential for implementing treatment plans, disease prevention, or rehabilitation.
- You will educate patients on disease prevention and recovery strategies.
- You will provide and accurately document both direct and indirect patient care services, ensuring the safety, comfort, personal hygiene, and protection of patients in a timely manner.
- You will perform skin tests, immunizations, phlebotomy, and initiate peripheral venous access.
- You will observe and assess signs and symptoms of illness, reactions to medications/treatments, and general behavior to differentiate between normal and abnormal conditions, initiating emergency procedures as necessary.
- You will plan and implement individualized patient care based on your observations, including appropriate reporting, referrals, and care in accordance with standardized procedures while catering to diverse patient populations.
- You will identify patients' readiness for learning and their ability to follow instructions, while also assessing safety concerns based on age and developmental factors.
- You will demonstrate the knowledge and ability to make necessary adjustments to meet the unique needs of specific populations, including cultural, spiritual, age-related, psychosocial, communication, gender, sexual orientation, economic, educational, family, and health condition needs.
- You will intervene to create a safe environment and evaluate the effectiveness of interventions for patients.

QualificationsEducational Background:
- Graduate of an accredited nursing program; BSN or higher preferred.
- Current California State RN License required.
- American Red Cross or American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- For RN III: Specialty certification (external applicants may obtain within one year of hire).
- Minimum of 3 years recent acute RN experience in specialty; note that a minimum of 1 year recent acute RN experience will be considered for Registered Nurse II.
- Working knowledge of applicable Standards of Practice.
- Demonstrates a commitment to customer service and an ability to meet the needs and expectations of patients and healthcare colleagues.
- Meets clinical criteria and protocol for the assigned level of Clinical Nurse.
