Compensation Structure

The annual salary range for this position is between $132,810 and $204,636, depending on experience and qualifications. Specific ranges for the SES.2 and SES.3 levels are $132,810 - $170,556 and $159,330 - $204,636 respectively.

Position Summary

We are seeking an Explosives Research Experiment Lead to oversee experimental initiatives involving high explosives and energetic materials. This role is crucial in supporting the management of the U.S. nuclear arsenal, advancing conventional weapon designs, and contributing to counterterrorism strategies.

This position may offer a hybrid work schedule, allowing for a combination of in-office and remote work.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design, implement, and evaluate explosively driven hydrodynamic experiments in collaboration with diagnostics operators and scientific personnel.
  • Provide innovative scientific and engineering solutions for hydrodynamic experiment designs.
  • Establish experimental requirements and supervise the execution of various experimental components.
  • Conduct experiments involving high explosives, ensuring safety and compliance with protocols.
  • Oversee the assembly of experimental apparatus to meet stringent specifications.
  • Perform quality assurance checks on experiments, ensuring high-quality data collection.
  • Analyze complex experimental data, document findings, and communicate insights effectively.
  • Present research outcomes to stakeholders and maintain comprehensive records of experiments.
  • Travel as necessary to support project needs.
  • Foster a culture of inclusion, diversity, and accountability within the team.
  • Undertake additional responsibilities as required.
Additional Responsibilities at SES.3 Level
  • Provide advanced technical expertise in multi-physics and computational modeling for diagnostics.
  • Manage multiple complex experiments concurrently, ensuring effective coordination.
  • Identify and integrate advanced diagnostic techniques into experimental frameworks.
  • Lead projects that require meticulous planning and collaborative execution.
Qualifications
  • U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain a DOE Q-level security clearance.
  • Master's Degree or PhD in physics, engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Strong understanding of hydrodynamic testing principles.
  • Hands-on experience in experimental science within controlled environments.
  • Proven ability to manage technical projects of moderate to large scale.
  • Demonstrated initiative and creativity in problem-solving.
  • Experience working in interdisciplinary teams to achieve long-term objectives.
  • Excellent communication skills for effective collaboration and reporting.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with explosives or high-hazard materials.
  • Familiarity with computer-aided design tools.
  • Proven leadership in team environments.
  • Expertise in diagnosing rapid transient phenomena.

Position Type
This is a career indefinite position open to both internal and external candidates.

Security Clearance Requirement
This role necessitates a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance. A background investigation will be initiated upon selection.

Drug Testing Requirement
Selected candidates must pass a pre-employment drug test, including testing for marijuana, in compliance with federal regulations.
