Job Overview

Position Summary: The Risk Assessment Specialist will utilize advanced underwriting principles to determine rate development for all group underwriting cases. This role requires the application of current models to rate formulation and active participation in the enhancement and expansion of these models. The individual will establish and implement company protocols while adhering to commercial medical underwriting standards. The Risk Assessment Specialist will also contribute to protocol development and provide training to associate or assistant staff in related tasks. At management's discretion, this role may involve representing the Underwriting department in corporate-sponsored initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Evaluate health information from group applicants in accordance with consistent underwriting guidelines.
  • Facilitate communication regarding underwriting requirements and decisions with relevant sales personnel.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in all department underwriting software.
  • Assess rating software methodologies and propose enhancements or improvements to department underwriting tools.
  • Understand the competitive landscape of quotes and develop mechanisms for financial analysis.
  • Provide training to assistant personnel on departmental processes and practices related to group underwriting.
  • Monitor and manage exceptions with financial implications for the organization.
  • Mentor junior staff members.
  • Oversee the compilation of all necessary data for auditing departmental activities.
  • Ensure compliance with both domestic and international insurance regulations.
  • Document departmental activities and collaborate with supervisors to develop underwriting guidelines for control processes.
  • Coordinate changes, fixes, and enhancements within the salesforce under the guidance of the Director of Underwriting Operations.
  • Act as a subject matter expert for underwriting in various projects.
  • Maintain organized departmental file systems.
  • Perform other assigned duties as necessary.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree is required.
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in health insurance underwriting practices.
  • A strong interest in the international health insurance sector.
  • Excellent analytical skills with a keen attention to detail.
  • Strong verbal and written communication abilities.
  • Capability to meet strict deadlines.
  • Proficiency in Excel is essential.
  • Must have a minimum internet speed of 75 Mbps for remote work.

Working Environment:

  • Flexibility to work in an office setting or remotely.
  • Occasional schedule flexibility may be required for key business meetings or critical job functions outside of standard hours.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to communicate effectively through auditory and visual means.
