Civil Engineering Technician IV Position

Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Engineering Technician IV to join our team at the County of San Bernardino, CA. As a key member of our department, you will be responsible for performing advanced, complex, and limited professional engineering duties. This includes operating, monitoring, and maintaining landfill gas flare stations, preparing landfill plans and maps, and designing minor structures or facilities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare various report figures, maps, and forms using CAD software
  • Conduct field reviews and inspections
  • Compute quantities and prepare engineers' estimates
  • Perform research in existing regulatory documents and engineering reports
  • Interact with public and other County governmental agencies
  • Write correspondence and coordinate utility protection or utility relocations
  • Design flood facilities and road facilities
  • Assist in writing and reviewing special provisions for contract specifications
  • Prepare right of way legal descriptions, documents, maps, and exhibits for flood projects and road design
  • Perform calculations or analysis related to land surveying activities
  • Take measurements for construction, topographic, and boundary surveys
  • Perform GIS, field, office, and right of way work
  • Perform landfill inspections for active and inactive landfill sites
  • Set up and collect stormwater samples
  • Monitor septic ponds, including measuring depths of sludge and calculation of head space
  • Monitor the groundwater level using sounding equipment
  • Perform landfill gas monitoring using a portable gas analyzer
  • Assist in the construction and maintenance of landfill gas extraction and treatment systems
  • Perform inventory for traffic control devices and collect average daily traffic
  • Perform spotting for striping
  • Perform traffic investigation
  • Operate and maintain climatological and hydraulic measuring devices and instrument housing
  • Operate and maintain ALERT flood warning stations
  • Manually download rainfall data from field stations and upload it into the District's Hydron database
  • Assist with field data collection for stream and precipitation gauges
  • Assist with the installation and maintenance of stream and precipitation gauges
  • Operate and maintain hydrologic metering and recording equipment, drafting simple sketches
  • Perform CEQA compliance reviews
  • Perform flood control permits reviews
  • Perform inspections of construction work
  • Monitor progress of contract work, ensuring compliance with plans and specifications
  • Assist in the preparation of permits
  • Perform road distress surveys and pavement investigation
  • Perform asphalt coring and other non-destructive testing on pavement
  • Inspect asphalt concrete and Portland cement placement
  • Perform compaction testing on earth material
  • Perform laboratory testing on asphalt, concrete, and earth material
  • Evaluate work zone setup
Requirements
  • Fifteen (15) semester (23 quarter) units of completed college coursework in civil engineering, engineering construction technology, or a closely related field
  • Three (3) years of full-time technical civil engineering or closely related work experience, including the application of engineering formulas, theories, and practices to construction, alteration, demolition, installation, or repair work
  • Or five (5) years of full-time experience equivalent to a Maintenance and Construction Supervisor I in San Bernardino County, supervising a crew in the maintenance/repair of construction projects of roads, flood control, landfill, or related public works facilities
Desired Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, engineering construction technology, or a closely related field
