JOB PURPOSE
Under limited supervision, provides specialized services to assist students in overcoming or compensating for challenges in physical performance areas, enabling them to benefit from tailored educational services. Reports to the Director of Special Services and Occupational Therapist Supervisor.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Evaluates referred students by assessing their range of motion, muscle strength, tone, sensory systems, fine motor skills, self-help skills, oral-motor skills, and visual-perceptual skills as necessary.
- Administers standardized assessments as required.
- Communicates evaluation outcomes to parents and educators.
- Collaborates with a multi-disciplinary team to develop individualized strategies, accommodations, and the use of adaptive equipment.
- Plans, coordinates, and delivers occupational therapy treatment sessions based on assessment findings and recommendations; instructs students in the proper use of adaptive equipment.
- Prepares and submits accurate documentation for all assigned cases; generates daily progress notes, quarterly summaries of progress, and updates as mandated by law and district policy.
- Selects, orders, and maintains adaptive equipment tailored to individual student needs.
- Engages with school personnel and parents as necessary to discuss student progress and concerns.
- Participates as a member of the Assistive Technology Team as appropriate.
- Trains staff in effective intervention techniques for individual students.
- Assists in establishing transportation protocols for students with special needs; supervises the transportation of students to and from therapy sessions.
- Maintains current knowledge and expertise in professional research, trends, and methodologies relevant to school-based physical therapy services; attends training, conferences, and workshops to enhance job knowledge and skills.
- Addresses inquiries, concerns, and complaints from staff, parents, medical personnel, and students regarding therapy services.
- Prepares and processes evaluation reports, intervention plans, case notes, and other necessary documentation.
- Operates various equipment including vehicles, power wheelchairs, manual wheelchairs, and office machinery such as computers, printers, and fax machines; utilizes splints, braces, and other adaptive tools as needed.
- Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals including supervisors, co-workers, district administrators, students, parents, medical professionals, community agencies, vendors, and the public.
- Performs routine administrative tasks as required, including preparing reports, filing documents, answering phones, and ordering supplies.
- Performs related duties as necessary.
QUALIFICATIONS
Requires an Associate's Degree as an Occupational Therapy Assistant from an accredited institution recognized by the Commission of Accreditation of Therapy Education (CAPTE). Experience in providing occupational therapy services, preferably in an educational environment, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that equips the individual with the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities. Must possess a current, valid certification from the S.C. Board of Occupational Therapy Examiners and a valid state driver's license.
