Job Summary

This role is responsible for the pre-analytical processing of patient specimens delivered to the laboratory 24/7. The successful candidate will exercise moderate skill, judgment, and knowledge of medical terminology and common procedures and practices of medical technology.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Receives and prioritizes specimens from inpatient and outpatient locations, ensuring timely processing and handling.

  2. Registers patient information into the hospital information system and logs-in laboratory procedure codes as ordered from manual requisitions or electronic orders.

  3. Provides administrative support, answering telephone calls, and responding to customer inquiries regarding test results, testing/specimen requirements, and other technical information.

  4. Assists technologists in the pre-analytical processing of select tests, including centrifugation, separating, and storing of samples.

  5. Works with a variety of healthcare providers to troubleshoot problem specimens and clarify correct test selection.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree or some college-level coursework in science or a related discipline.

  • Customer service experience preferred.

  • Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy/physiology a plus.

Work Environment

This role is based at Strong Memorial Hospital, with the possibility of rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays as assigned.
