Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Principal Clerk to join our team at the City of Somerville. As a key member of our administrative staff, you will be responsible for providing exceptional support to our financial services department.

Key Responsibilities
  • Process complex financial transactions, including returned checks, small balance write-offs, and payment redistributions.
  • Operate a customer service window, handling a high volume of money, balance warrants, and processing checks.
  • Maintain and retrieve files and records, answer telephones, and prepare outgoing correspondence.
  • Provide routine information on department services, fill out forms, and retrieve records from electronic databases.
  • Act as a backup for posting receipts to accounts receivable and accepting departmental cash receipts.
  • Assist constituents with online payments and questions, and perform other duties as assigned by the Treasurer.
Requirements
  • High school graduate or equivalent with business courses.
  • Two years of experience in a computerized office environment.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, and Excel) and ability to learn MUNIS system.
  • Excellent writing, oral, computer, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently, exercise judgment, and interact professionally with others.
  • Bi-lingual/bi-cultural experience a plus.
Work Environment

The work environment is typical of an office setting, with occasional exposure to outside elements. The physical demands of the job include sitting for long periods, reaching, bending, and stooping.
