The Department of Surgery is thrilled to announce an opening for a Nutrition Services Specialist 2. The selected candidate will deliver nutritional services and medical nutrition therapy to patients, assisting them in achieving their medical and personal objectives. This role also entails providing mentorship and guidance to junior staff members and serving as a knowledgeable resource regarding patient nutrition.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Collaborates with physicians and other healthcare professionals to align medical and nutritional requirements of patients.
  • Evaluates the nutritional needs of patients and formulates and executes nutritional care plans.
  • Records the nutritional status and requirements of both hospitalized and outpatient individuals following established care standards and practice guidelines.
  • Initiates and monitors patients for nutrient intake analysis, offering recommendations for continued progression or the initiation of alternative therapies.
  • Issues orders for diet, supplements, enteral/parenteral nutrition, and laboratory data in accordance with hospital policies.
  • Provides counseling and education to patients and their families on various aspects of medical nutrition therapy and drug-nutrient interactions.
  • Acts as a clinical nutrition resource and subject matter expert for physicians, patients, and staff.
  • Engages in departmental performance improvement initiatives and training.
  • Complies with University and unit-level policies and procedures while safeguarding University assets.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field.
  • Certification in a pertinent specialty or field.
  • A minimum of 5 years of relevant experience.

DEPARTMENT ADDENDUM

Department Specific Functions

This position will closely collaborate with the Section Chief of the Division of Laparoendoscopic and Bariatric Surgery to ensure high-quality patient care for all active patients.

The individual will primarily focus on delivering high-quality, cost-effective medical nutrition therapy to bariatric patients of all ages through a collaborative healthcare team approach. Responsibilities include conducting assessments of oral, enteral, parenteral, and transitional feeding therapies, planning, implementing, monitoring, evaluating, and documenting patient responses to medical and surgical nutrition therapy. Participation in departmental performance improvement activities, orientation and training, and interdisciplinary patient care activities is expected. The role also involves serving as a clinical nutrition resource to patients, physicians, and staff, leading bariatric educational sessions, and facilitating support groups. Additionally, the individual will assist in maintaining accreditation guidelines as established by MBSAQIP, perform comprehensive nutrition assessments and reassessments based on calculated or established needs, and support pre-operative and post-operative nutritional evaluations for bariatric and reflux patients.
