About the Role

The Detention Officer is an essential member of our team at the Butler County jail. This corrections professional will be responsible for ensuring the safe and humane treatment of inmates.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure the humane treatment and safekeeping of inmates;
  • Assist with serving meals to prisoners;
  • Book and process inmates;
  • Supervise and check prisoners on a half-hour basis, conduct searches, pat downs, and inspections;
  • Dispense commissary needs;
  • Dispense medications and notify physician of medical needs;
  • Maintain the jail in good and clean order;
  • Meet the public at the detention center and supervise visiting hours;
  • Monitor medical status of prisoners;
  • Notify the Detention Corporal of supplies needed and order supplies;
  • Record all activities of inmates, including phone calls and medical needs;
  • Transport prisoners to and from court and the doctor's office and other facilities as required;
  • Staff the reception area, review incoming and outgoing mail, and assist attorneys with inmate visits;
  • Review visitor profiles and approve or deny visits;
  • Assist with phone/video issues and answer incoming calls at the facility;
  • Complete reports on activity, logs, and incident management;
  • Provide testimony for court and conduct security checks;
  • Process bookings of new inmates, as needed;
  • Provide prisoner transport as needed;
  • Notify corporal of medical issues;
  • Perform other duties as deemed necessary or as required.

Requirements:

  • Six months to twelve months related experience, High School Diploma or G.E.D. and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Valid driver's license.

This position involves shift work, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays. The employee is exposed to very stressful situations where things may seem chaotic. This position may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens or bodily fluids, dangerous situations. Lifting, moving, pushing or pulling up to 25 pounds does generally occur, in emergencies may be necessary to lift, move, push, or pull up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception, distance vision and ability to adjust focus.
