Position Overview:

The Nebraska Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing is in search of a Part-Time Staff Interpreter who possesses professional certification in interpreting and is dedicated to making a significant impact in the community.

In this role, the Staff Interpreter will operate under limited supervision to facilitate communication access services and provide sign language interpretation for agency staff and community members as necessary. Supervision will be provided by Management.

Key Responsibilities:

The Staff Interpreter will:
  • Deliver licensed sign language interpreting services during various communication scenarios including phone calls, video calls, and meetings.
  • Provide external interpreting services for outside agencies and clients as needed, subject to approval.
  • Educate consumers and service providers about the role of licensed sign language interpreters and advocate for public awareness.
  • Participate in special projects and collaborate on various initiatives as required.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned within the scope of the role.


Qualifications:

Minimum Requirements:
Completion of post-high school coursework, a two-year interpreter training program or equivalent, along with QAST or RID certification and relevant interpreting experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
Candidates should possess RID National Certification and have a minimum of five years of interpreting experience across diverse professional environments. Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) and spoken English is essential, along with strong sign-to-voice skills. A comprehensive understanding of Deaf culture and the ability to interpret in specialized settings is required.

Additional Information:
Occasional travel may be necessary, including overnight stays. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with a diverse clientele are essential. Regular and reliable attendance is mandatory.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
The candidate should be knowledgeable about interpreter ethics, the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) code of professional conduct, and federal and state regulations concerning services for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community. The ability to interpret policies and maintain confidentiality is crucial, along with the capacity to plan and deliver training for sign language interpreters.
