Job Summary

The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago is seeking a skilled Maintenance Laborer to join our team. As a key member of our maintenance crew, you will be responsible for performing a variety of routine, manual labor tasks to ensure the smooth operation of our facilities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform manual labor tasks such as landscaping maintenance, pavement sweeping, floor care, window washing, snow and ice removal, refuse pick up, and other typical janitorial duties.
  • Inspect and maintain assigned tools and equipment, checking for proper operation and availability of accessories.
  • Operate and work with power tools, electrical and other cleaning equipment.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors and other personnel to coordinate and carry out assignments.
  • Follow work and safety rules, particularly as they pertain to protective clothing and cleaning product usage.
  • Respond to emergency situations, such as damaged or malfunctioning equipment, accidents, or disrupted operational processes.

Requirements

  • Ability to read and understand simple instructions at approximately the sixth grade level.
  • Possession of a valid Illinois driver's license.

Working Conditions

Typical duties may involve exposure to industrial equipment or operations, working near operating mechanical equipment and loud noise, and working in close proximity to or in conjunction with construction activities. Work may be performed in a variety of weather conditions and may involve working in confined spaces or at heights.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Some knowledge of the materials, methods, and equipment employed in the cleaning of buildings and maintenance of lawn areas.
  • Some knowledge of basic hand tools and ability to use them in making simple repairs.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and/or written instructions.
  • Ability to make basic decisions regarding safety and the completion of work tasks.
  • Physical strength and agility sufficient to lift and move/carry moderately heavy objects and to work long hours while standing.
