Position Overview

The Northeast Maritime Institute (NMI) is seeking a dedicated individual to join our team as a Nautical Science Instructor. This role involves delivering comprehensive nautical science education within our College of Maritime Science's Associate in Applied Science in Nautical Science Program (AASNS). The instructor will be responsible for teaching up to 15 credit hours per semester and will engage in practical training exercises, curriculum development, and student advisement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Align course delivery with the mission and objectives of NMI.
  • Deliver courses that comply with USCG and STCW standards for ratings, licensing, and endorsement programs.
  • Enhance and update program curriculum to reflect current maritime industry practices.
  • Prepare and instruct USCG-approved courses, including necessary instructional materials and simulation activities.
  • Ensure all courses are adequately resourced in collaboration with administrative staff.
  • Incorporate modern pedagogical techniques into teaching.
  • Provide academic counseling and support to students.
  • Maintain regular office hours for student consultations.
  • Conduct assessments and examinations in accordance with institutional and regulatory standards.
  • Submit attendance, grades, and other required documentation punctually.
  • Report student absenteeism to the appropriate support services.
  • Request necessary teaching materials and resources in a timely manner.
  • Document teaching and research activities for annual evaluations.
  • Offer tutoring and develop intervention plans for students performing below the expected academic threshold.
  • Design and propose new courses and curriculum enhancements.
  • Assist in the development of course materials and adapt curriculum to meet evolving industry and regulatory requirements.
  • Integrate hands-on learning experiences across all maritime disciplines.
  • Collaborate with academic leadership to enhance NMI's online learning platform.
  • Support the coordination of student internships for practical maritime experience.
  • Create and implement educational resources for NMI.

Qualifications

• Valid 1600-ton USCG License

• Bachelor's Degree or higher

• Previous teaching experience is preferred
