About the Position:
Department Overview
The Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) delivers comprehensive care to patients requiring intensive monitoring and nursing support. Each of the 16 beds is equipped with bedside monitors linked to a central monitoring system. These monitors provide essential data including electrocardiogram, non-invasive blood pressure, oxygen saturation, and multiple pressure modules, with the capability to add additional monitoring modules as needed.
The care provided encompasses the medical and nursing management of patients who: (1) experience acute onset of diseases affecting any organ system, (2) are at risk of developing life-threatening complications due to their acute condition or injury, and (3) suffer from exacerbations of chronic diseases. Care in the MICU includes early detection and prevention of complications, management of complex physiological issues, and education for patients and their families, along with psychosocial support.
Patients admitted to the MICU may include those with:
- Respiratory failure
- Hemodynamically unstable conditions requiring invasive monitoring and close observation
- Drug overdose with medical instability
- Multisystem organ failure
- Severe hyperglycemia or hypoglycemia
- COVID-19
Therapeutic interventions in the MICU may involve peritoneal dialysis, hemodialysis, continuous renal replacement therapy, and conventional ventilation support. Monitoring techniques include central venous pressure, pulmonary artery monitoring, arterial lines, electrocardiograms, pulse oximetry, and apnea monitoring.
Minimum Job Qualifications
- Licensure or Certifications: Must be licensed to practice as an RN in Georgia
- Educational Requirements: Associate's Degree in Nursing
- Minimum Experience:
- Other: At least one year of experience as a professional RN. New graduate RNs or those with less than one year of experience will be directed to the RN Residency Program.
Preferred Job Qualifications
- Preferred Licensure or Certifications: National certification in a clinical specialty
- Preferred Educational Requirements: Bachelor's Degree in Nursing
- Preferred Experience: One year of experience in Long Term Care
- Other: Membership in a professional organization
Job Specific Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Essential Tasks and Responsibilities
- Clinical Skills and Knowledge: Demonstrates fundamental assessment skills, adheres to the five rights of medication administration, manages care for basic patient assignments, and progresses to more complex patient care. Accurately documents all aspects of the nursing process using electronic medical records. Understands and complies with all relevant standards and policies. Evaluates patient responses to interventions and adjusts care plans as necessary. Coordinates interdisciplinary care effectively and participates in quality improvement processes.
- Interpersonal Skills and Relationships: Involves patients and families in care decisions, provides effective education tailored to patient/family learning needs, and demonstrates appropriate customer service behaviors.
- Critical Thinking Skills and Innovation: Plans patient care based on assessments, prioritizes tasks, evaluates patient responses, and seeks support when necessary. Recognizes signs of patient deterioration and accesses appropriate resources. Engages with nursing research and evidence-based practice articles.
- Leadership and Professional Development: Supports unit goals, demonstrates awareness of shared governance initiatives, completes a professional development plan, and supervises ancillary/support staff. Participates in enhancing the nursing profession and supporting the community.
