Road Maintenance Trainee

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Road Maintenance Trainee to join our team at Johnson County Government. As a Road Maintenance Trainee, you will have the opportunity to learn and develop skills in road maintenance, construction, and repair. This is a temporary trainee position with a maximum employment duration of five months for seasonal employment and six months for full-time employment.
Key Responsibilities- Perform routine semi-skilled and skilled tasks under close supervision in the completion of general road maintenance tasks, including tasks related to the construction, maintenance, and repair of roads, rights of way, and other County infrastructure.
- Operate a variety of light-duty road maintenance equipment and attachments, including trucks, skid-steer loaders, compact rollers, mini excavators, power brooms, and snow removal equipment.
- Perform pre-trip inspections of trucks and equipment, execute field maintenance activities required to operate the equipment, and perform general and routine maintenance of light-duty equipment.
- Participate in emergency response activities, including sign repair, closing roads, addressing flood issues, and plowing and sanding activities for snow events.
- A high school diploma or equivalent and a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record are required.
- This position requires the ability to lift 50 pounds and stand or walk for extended periods.
- Travel is required, with 50% local and 5% outside Johnson County.
- Wear goggles, rubber boots, rubber gloves, and other personal protective equipment as required.
