Position Overview

Are you passionate about safeguarding the well-being of marine life, particularly shellfish species such as oysters, crabs, and sea stars? This role at the Department of Fish and Wildlife offers a unique opportunity to delve into shellfish research and aquaculture methodologies. As a member of our team, you will acquire essential skills for evaluating shellfish health, which include: conducting examinations and diagnosing diseases using advanced techniques such as qPCR and microbiology. You will also learn to perform animal necropsies independently, ensuring proper sample preservation and thorough data collection and analysis.

In this role, you will assist in developing diagnostic protocols for emerging aquatic pathogens, contributing to effective management strategies. Your responsibilities will include participating in field inspections of shellfish farming operations and aquaria across various locations. You will support experienced staff in a wide array of tasks related to health and disease management of both cultured and wild shellfish populations, as well as aiding in the recovery efforts for endangered species.

Additionally, you will maintain aquatic life support systems for shellfish, which involves routine filter maintenance, tank siphoning, and algae collection and feeding. Laboratory upkeep, including washing glassware and managing supplies, will also be part of your duties. Collaborating on research initiatives focused on shellfish health and disease ecology will further enhance your experience in this field.

Working Environment

The position entails a variety of working conditions, including prolonged periods of standing while processing samples, and extended periods of sitting for data entry and literature review. You will work in diverse settings, including dry and wet laboratories, as well as field locations such as rocky intertidal zones and shellfish farms. Occasional field trips may be required.

Special Qualifications

A valid California driver's license is required for this position. This role is classified as a non-testing position within the Fish and Wildlife Scientific Aid category.
