Job Summary:

The University of Maryland, Baltimore is seeking a highly skilled Patent Attorney or Senior Patent Attorney to join its Office of Research and Development's Technology Transfer department. The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting patentability analysis, overseeing the university's patent portfolio, and educating clients on the protection of internal information.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct patentability analysis for newly disclosed inventions and make recommendations based on research of prior art and potential encumbrances.
  • Oversee the university's patent portfolio, tracking the activities of external patent counsel.
  • Educate clients about the protection of internal information such as product formulas and working strategies.
  • Interface with faculty and staff to effectively use external counsel resources and provide general education in the patent process.
  • Research and document scientific and patent law rationale for UMB inventions.
  • Counsel clients on safe capital investment in intellectual property.
  • Manage licensing, importing and exporting, franchising, and proprietorship procedures.
  • Litigate illegal and illicit cases in U.S. courts and trade commissions.
  • Distribute copyrights and grants permission for reproduction of technology in other mediums.
  • Collaborate with team members to determine commercial potential, licenses, and contractual agreements.
  • Conduct registration processes for trademarks.
Requirements:
  • Juris Doctor required. Bachelor's degree in life sciences field preferred.
  • Three (3) years of progressively responsible experience as an intellectual property officer or patent attorney, preferably in engineering or life science fields.
  • Admission to the Patent Bar and registered with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) within one (1) year of employment.
