Summary

The County of Delaware's Public Defender's Office is dedicated to providing legal representation to individuals facing potential incarceration within the criminal, juvenile, and mental health systems. Our team comprises approximately 70 legal professionals committed to advocating for our clients' rights. Each year, we represent thousands of clients across various courts in Pennsylvania.
Key Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Public Defender and relevant unit heads, the Investigator plays a crucial role in supporting the legal team during criminal, juvenile, and mental health cases. The responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Identifying and interviewing witnesses, victims, and clients promptly.
  • Delivering subpoenas to witnesses efficiently.
  • Conducting covert surveillance of subjects as instructed by attorneys.
  • Creating professional visual aids such as photographs, diagrams, and maps to enhance case understanding.
  • Providing testimony in court regarding investigative findings.
  • Generating leads and sourcing information relevant to cases.
  • Executing assigned investigations and updating case management systems promptly.
  • Participating in case review meetings and maintaining regular communication with attorneys about case progress.
  • Collecting, analyzing, and distributing essential records, including court, medical, military, criminal, and psychological documents.
  • Reviewing presentence reports and preparing necessary supporting documentation.
  • Offering consultation and educational support to colleagues; engaging in training initiatives.
  • Completing special projects and additional tasks as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Strong oral and written communication skills to interact effectively with diverse individuals.
  • Ability to engage empathetically with clients and understand their unique needs.
  • Proficiency in utilizing interpreters when necessary for effective communication.
  • Commitment to maintaining confidentiality regarding sensitive information.
  • Competence in using technology for information retrieval and research.
  • Capacity to learn quickly and perform efficiently in high-pressure situations.
  • Adept at multitasking, prioritizing, and managing time effectively.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a legal services team.
  • Demonstrated dedication to public service and a strong work ethic.
  • Preferred: Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice or a related field.
  • Preferred: Fluency in Spanish.

Residency Requirement: Employees must reside in Delaware County or be willing to relocate within six months of employment.
