Position Summary

The Registered Nurse is accountable for employing the nursing process to assess, plan, direct, administer, and evaluate patient care that is evidence-based and outcome-oriented within the Medical/Surgical and Special Care Unit. This role involves continuous assessment of patient requirements and implementing necessary interventions to uphold patient care strategies. The RN supervises the quality of care provided by Certified Nursing Assistants and other assigned staff. Additionally, the RN actively participates in decision-making processes concerning nursing practices and is equipped to respond swiftly and accurately to changes in patient conditions or treatment responses.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct thorough and accurate patient assessments; perform initial admission evaluations; coordinate and ensure the completion of interdisciplinary screenings and assessments; assess and reassess pain, ensuring assessments are appropriate for age, culture, and psychosocial factors.
  • Develop a comprehensive care plan based on patient needs, adjusting the plan as necessary based on patient outcomes; create an educational plan addressing identified learning needs and evaluate the effectiveness of the education provided, including instructing patients and families on treatment plans and discharge instructions.
  • Make informed nursing decisions based on the analysis of facts and evaluation of patient outcomes; assist physicians during procedures; collaborate with other departments to provide interdisciplinary care as needed; maintain proficiency in telemetry monitoring systems; identify arrhythmias and respond appropriately.
  • Administer medications based on the patient's age and clinical condition; initiate intravenous lines for medication and fluid administration.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of pain management strategies; modify care plans as indicated by the patient's response to treatment.
  • Ensure documentation is thorough, accurate, and timely; maintain patient records in both electronic and paper formats.
  • Perform all duties in a manner that prioritizes patient safety and minimizes the risk of medical errors; utilize established hand-off communication protocols; safeguard the security of the department.
  • Respond promptly and courteously to patient call lights; assess patient needs before leaving the room. Monitor and report any changes in patient conditions or behaviors.
  • Adhere to all established safety protocols to maintain a secure environment for patients, visitors, and staff.
  • Engage in performance improvement initiatives.
  • Carry out additional responsibilities as assigned.

Certification and Licensure Requirements

  • Current Illinois RN License Required
  • BLS Certification Required
  • ACLS Certification required within 12 months of hire
  • PALS Certification required within 2 years of hire

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience as a Registered Nurse preferred

Computer Skills

  • Proficient computer skills with the ability to navigate Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems
