Position Overview:
The Certified Patient Care Assistant (CPCA) is responsible for delivering a variety of patient support services across multiple healthcare environments.

This role involves providing essential care as directed by a Registered Nurse to patients within a specialized unit at the Department of Veterans Affairs.

The CPCA plays a crucial role in assisting healthcare professionals in the management and treatment of patients facing serious health challenges.

Key Responsibilities:
As a Certified Patient Care Assistant, your duties will include but are not limited to:
  • Facilitating patient admissions by building rapport and guiding patients through the unit's layout, regulations, and their rights.
  • Delivering nursing care to a diverse patient population, including those who are acutely, chronically, or critically ill.
  • Contributing to patient care planning and execution.
  • Encouraging suggestions for enhancing patient care and fostering a collaborative environment.
  • Monitoring, documenting, and reporting changes in patients' conditions, behaviors, and concerns.
  • Implementing appropriate interventions during behavioral incidents.
  • Promoting patient independence and assisting with daily living activities as needed.
  • Maintaining cleanliness and orderliness in the ward and ensuring proper care of equipment.
  • Keeping supervisors informed about supply shortages and equipment issues.
  • Actively participating in creating a safe, recovery-oriented environment for both patients and staff.
  • Taking responsibility for validating observations and therapeutic interventions with the healthcare team.
  • Engaging as a member of the multidisciplinary treatment team.
  • Assisting Registered Nurses in patient care and treatment.
  • Recognizing emergency situations and intervening within the scope of practice while awaiting further assistance.
  • Supporting charge nurses with dressing changes and complex procedures.
  • Utilizing lifting equipment effectively to assist patients with mobility.
  • Educating and demonstrating safe equipment usage to other staff members.

Work Schedule:
Full-time; specific tour details will be discussed during the interview.

Requirements:
To qualify for this position, candidates must meet the following conditions:
  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • All selected applicants will undergo a urinalysis for illegal drug screening prior to appointment.
  • Selective Service Registration is mandatory for males born after December 31, 1959.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English is essential.
  • Probationary period may be required.
  • Background/security investigation will be conducted.
  • Completion of an online onboarding process is necessary.
  • Passing a pre-employment physical assessment is required.
  • Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is mandatory for all healthcare personnel.
  • Compliance with the COVID-19 vaccination program is required for all healthcare personnel.
Qualifications:
Applicants who are in the process of completing educational or certification requirements may be considered but cannot be hired until all qualifications are met.

Basic Requirements:
  • U.S. Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when qualified citizens are unavailable.
  • English Language: Proficiency in spoken and written English is required.
  • Education: Six months of general experience or one year above high school with relevant coursework, or completion of a specialized course resulting in certification as a nursing assistant.
Physical Requirements:
The role requires physical capabilities such as lifting, prolonged standing, and frequent bending, as well as mental and sensory skills including recall, reasoning, and effective communication. The work environment may vary in pace and requires adaptability to changing conditions.
