Position Overview:
The Clinical Nurse I is an entry-level nursing role that applies scientific principles and theoretical frameworks, along with established policies, care standards, and protocols to inform practice. This position relies on the guidance, experience, and support of colleagues while building expertise in clinical practice. The Clinical Nurse I embodies the mission, vision, and values of Rush University Medical Center and adheres to its policies and procedures.

Work Type: Full Time (FTE between 0.9 and 1.0)
Shift: Shift 4
Schedule: 8 Hr (3:00 PM - 11:30 PM) (Every other weekend)

Qualifications:

  1. Current State of Illinois Registered Nurse licensure is mandatory.
  2. Must maintain a valid BLS certification.
  3. A Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN) or an Associate’s degree in Nursing (ADN) is required. New graduates must gain acceptance into an accredited nursing program within six months of hire.
  4. Within one year of employment, the individual must enroll in a BSN program.
  5. RNs hired prior to a specified date are exempt from obtaining a BSN.
  6. Approval from the Chief Nursing Officer is required for RNs with an ADN hired after a specified date, based on unit needs.

Essential Skills:

  1. Ability to navigate throughout the Medical Center and remain on foot for most of the shift.
  2. Capability to lift or carry objects weighing 35-40 lbs and assist patients, some of whom may exceed 300 lbs.
  3. Proficiency in reviewing documents for accuracy, utilizing a keyboard for data entry, and closely examining specimens or reports.
  4. Work conditions may involve performing tasks where carelessness could lead to injury or exposure to infectious materials.

Responsibilities:

  1. Proactively seeks resources to manage new patient scenarios.
  2. Consistently applies evidence-based guidelines, nursing standards, and protocols.
  3. Contributes to hospital-wide initiatives aimed at achieving positive patient outcomes.
  4. Establishes therapeutic relationships with patients and families through effective communication and mutual goal setting.
  5. Treats patients and families with respect, acknowledging diverse perspectives and cultures.
  6. Maintains professional relationships with all healthcare team members.
  7. Collaborates effectively with other nursing professionals.
  8. Demonstrates foundational collaboration skills to address patient and family needs.
  9. Utilizes basic assessment skills to evaluate the physical and psychosocial needs of patients and families.
  10. Employs scientific knowledge to create and implement care plans for assigned patients with guidance from experienced staff.
  11. Recognizes changes in patient status and seeks appropriate resources for intervention.
  12. Safely and effectively uses medical devices in patient care and seeks assistance when necessary.
  13. Demonstrates accountability for adhering to policies regarding safe medication administration.
  14. Assesses patient safety needs and implements strategies to minimize risks.
  15. Effectively applies the teaching-learning process to meet the educational needs of patients and families.
  16. Demonstrates accountability for professional practice and progress toward annual goals.
  17. Supports unit objectives and change initiatives.
  18. Exhibits foundational delegation skills to meet patient needs.
  19. Performs other duties as assigned.
