Job Summary

The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago is seeking a highly skilled Principal Architect to lead our architectural design team. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for coordinating architectural design activities, supervising subordinate personnel, and ensuring that projects are completed on time and within budget.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assign, supervise, and review the work of subordinate personnel, including architects, engineers, and designers.
  • Supervise the preparation of architectural plans and specifications, including sketches, drawings, details, and specifications.
  • Coordinate architectural design activities with other design disciplines to meet district needs within established budget, time, and regulatory constraints.
  • Supervise the preparation of correspondence from contractors and other sections during design and construction phases of projects.
  • Supervise the preparation of cost estimates and design calculations for architectural components of projects.
  • Manage consultant professional services contracts relative to architectural design work to ensure that the design schedule will be met on time and within budget.
  • Prepare design parameters for architectural components of projects and coordinate with other sections.
  • Communicate with staff members from other departments and sections, contractors, and vendors.

Requirements

  • Registration as an Architect by the State of Illinois.
  • Graduation from an accredited five-year college or university majoring in architecture or architectural engineering and six years of experience in architecture, three years of which must have been at the full professional level.
  • Graduate study in architecture or architectural engineering may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
  • Professional or sub-professional architecture or architectural engineering experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
  • Civil service status as a Senior Architect.

Working Conditions

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques of architecture.
  • Thorough knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and data base management software.
  • Thorough knowledge of state and local construction practices, rules, and regulations.
  • Thorough knowledge of construction materials, the various trades, and their jurisdictional boundaries.
  • Thorough knowledge of recent developments, current literature, and sources of information in architecture.
  • Ability to plan and supervise the work of others in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale.
  • Ability to review architectural drawings with accompanying explanatory comments.
  • Ability to coordinate the activities of architectural design consultants.
  • Ability to prepare architectural drawings and make feasibility studies for building and renovation projects.
  • Ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.
