Position Summary
The role of the Registered Veterinary Technician involves delivering exceptional care to animals within our Veterinary Clinic. Responsibilities include performing blood draws, placing IV catheters, providing nursing care, assisting in anesthesia, and preparing for surgical procedures. You will collaborate closely with veterinarians to ensure high-quality medical treatment for all shelter animals.
As a certified RVT, you are expected to demonstrate leadership within your role, guiding colleagues, exemplifying best practices, and training new staff members. Your expertise will serve as a model for excellence in veterinary care.
Key Responsibilities
- Engage with clients and shelter personnel regarding the health and well-being of animals in the clinic, addressing inquiries about procedures and veterinary care.
- Maintain accurate and timely medical and surgical records in compliance with organizational protocols.
- Update health status records in the shelter database and ensure appropriate follow-up actions are taken.
- Collaborate with veterinarians and veterinary management to establish and follow vaccination and treatment protocols.
- Assist veterinarians during examinations by providing proper animal restraint, gathering medical histories, and performing necessary tasks as directed.
- Dispense medications from a central pharmacy, ensuring all animals receive the correct treatments.
- Administer treatments as prescribed by veterinarians and uphold high standards of patient care.
- Provide guidance and triage for incoming animals requiring medical assistance.
- Communicate effectively with shelter veterinarians regarding the treatment status of animals, prioritizing concerns as necessary.
- Conduct in-house laboratory tests and radiographs as needed.
- Calculate and administer appropriate drug dosages and fluid rates for patient care.
- Maintain cleanliness and safety of clinic equipment and facilities, adhering to infection control protocols.
- Ensure proper diets and care for hospitalized patients, documenting all relevant information.
- Support the training of externs and volunteers as required.
- Assist with euthanasia procedures when necessary.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.

Physical Demands
- Ability to sit at a computer for extended periods.
- Must be capable of lifting, pushing, and pulling at least forty pounds with reasonable accommodations.
- Ability to remain on feet for prolonged periods.
- Regular exposure to animals and allergens in the workplace.
- Occasional driving of organization vehicles to fulfill job responsibilities.
Education and Experience
- Associate's degree in veterinary technology from an accredited institution and a current Registered Veterinary Technician license.
- Completion of a veterinary technician internship or a minimum of one year of experience in a veterinary hospital or animal shelter setting.
