POSITION TITLE: Residential Support Specialist

SUMMARY:

Under the direct oversight of the Consultant/Supervisor and Lead Residential Support Specialists, the Residential Support Specialist will collaborate as a member of a dedicated treatment team within a 24/7 staffed group home environment. This role involves executing individualized resident treatment plans while fostering and nurturing positive, constructive relationships among residents, peers, and staff members. The Specialist will motivate youth to develop and enhance their skills across various domains, enabling them to reach their fullest potential and contribute positively to society.

TRAINING AND CERTIFICATION:

Residential Support Specialists are expected to engage in training, consultation, and evaluation activities as outlined by the agency. Participation in professional development initiatives, including training sessions, treatment planning, and team meetings, is essential. Specialists must coordinate their schedules to ensure attendance at scheduled observations as indicated in the consultation service delivery plan. Opportunities for certification are available for full-time Specialists after one year of continuous employment, with maintenance of certification through annual evaluations thereafter.

ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Specialist will undertake general administrative tasks as assigned by Consultants/Supervisors, Family Teachers, or Supervisors of Residential Support Specialists. Typical administrative duties may include:

  1. Assisting in providing a balanced and nutritious diet for the youth in accordance with USDA guidelines.
  2. Facilitating access to necessary medical, psychological, or dental care for the youth.
  3. Helping procure adequate clothing and personal items for the youth.
  4. Completing clerical tasks required by state and local agencies, including:
  • Daily progress notes for youth
  • Petty cash management
  • USDA Food Record Log
  • Morning reports
  • Incident documentation
  • Medication logs
  • Medical treatment logs
  1. Ensuring proper maintenance of facilities, vehicles, and equipment by submitting reports as necessary.
  2. Maintaining safety, cleanliness, and sanitary standards within the home and surrounding areas.

Additionally, the Specialist will engage with the community and relevant agencies professionally to uphold positive public relations for the group home and agency.

SPECIFIC DUTIES:

The following tasks are likely to be assigned to the Residential Support Specialist, determined through collaborative decision-making with the Consultant/Supervisor and Supervisor of Residential Support Specialists:

  1. Providing guidance, supervision, and supportive relationships tailored to each individual youth.
  2. Creating a therapeutic environment conducive to:
  • Enhancing the youth's self-awareness and appreciation of their skills.
  • Improving coping mechanisms in socially acceptable ways.
  • Fostering positive interactions with adults and peers.
  • Preparing youth for successful independent living.
  1. Assisting in the implementation of a comprehensive treatment curriculum aimed at skill development in:
  • Cognitive abilities
  • Self-care practices
  • Family living skills
  • Independent living techniques
  • Academic achievement
  • Social interaction
  • Pre-vocational and vocational training
  1. Collaborating on the development and execution of treatment goals and strategies.
  2. Reviewing each youth's progress daily.
  3. Facilitating a self-governance system to encourage youth involvement in decision-making and problem-solving.
  4. Implementing an organized motivation system to support youth achievement.
  5. Modeling appropriate behavior in accordance with community standards and agency guidelines.
  6. Adhering to a professional code of ethics as established by the national Teaching-Family Association.

Lastly, the Specialist will contribute to the program's operation within the guidelines set by administration, in compliance with state regulations for child care institutions.

  1. Assisting with youth assessments and transportation as needed.
  2. Performing any additional duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  2. Experience in direct care work, with knowledge of the Teaching Family Homes Model preferred.
  3. Must possess good moral character.
  4. Valid driver's license and a clean driving record are necessary, along with adequate vehicle insurance if using a personal vehicle for work purposes.
  5. Background checks are mandatory.
