School Safety Officer
REPORTS TO:
Chief of School Security
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
None
JOB OBJECTIVE:
To proactively reduce and/or mitigate potential threats that may arise within the school environment by providing support to at-risk youth and their families, aligning with the objectives of the Safe Schools initiative.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Uphold state and local regulations and ordinances.
Make necessary referrals to juvenile services or other relevant agencies.
Engage with students to deter juvenile delinquency through positive interactions and relationships. Design and implement crime prevention initiatives and conduct safety assessments to discourage criminal behavior.
Analyze crime data and collaborate with local law enforcement and students to develop effective crime prevention tactics.
Foster a strong partnership with school leadership to ensure a secure educational setting.
Support school officials in enforcing educational policies and regulations.
Ensure the safety of school administrators during searches that may involve weapons or controlled substances.
Assist in emergency preparedness and security planning for the school.
Provide training for educational staff on crisis management.
Maintain a visible presence throughout the school, its grounds, and surrounding areas.
Participate in school events and activities.
Build collaborative relationships with school personnel, students, and parent organizations.
Report to work consistently.
Collaborate with guidance counselors and support staff to assist students and facilitate referrals to community services.
Support conflict resolution initiatives.Promote the law enforcement profession and serve as a positive role model.
Deliver instruction in character development and mentor students facing challenges.
Provide law enforcement services in proximity to the school.
Investigate reported criminal incidents following established protocols.
Perform additional duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
High School diploma or equivalent.
Possess a valid driver's license.
Completion of an accredited law enforcement training program. Must obtain SRO certification as recommended by the relevant educational authority within the initial employment period.
Must achieve CPR certification within the initial employment period.
A minimum of three years of law enforcement experience.
Must be at least 24 years of age.
LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY:
Ability to compose reports, business correspondence, and procedural documentation; ability to effectively communicate information and respond to inquiries from groups of administrators, staff, and the public.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to sit, speak, or listen. The employee may occasionally need to stand, walk, reach, bend, and lift items weighing up to 25 pounds. Mobility is essential to access various work locations.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and the community. Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The employee will operate within an environment that adheres to school board policies.
This role may require flexible working hours due to evening events or emergencies, including weekends and holidays.
PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS:
Employees are expected to uphold a high standard of professional conduct in accordance with the established code of ethics. Breaches of professional conduct may include neglect of responsibilities, dishonesty, or engagement in activities contrary to school policy or legal regulations.
PERFORMANCE EVALUATION:
Job performance will be assessed according to the policies set forth by the Board regarding personnel evaluation.
