Job Overview:


This role involves managing billing processes, following up on accounts, and resolving issues that hinder the payment of patient accounts in accordance with Intermountain's policies and procedures.

Position Details:

This is a PRN position 'As Needed'

As a Patient Access Coordinator, you will be responsible for:
Registering patients efficiently. Confirming, entering, and/or updating all necessary demographic information for patients and guarantors in the registration system. Preventing overlays and duplicate medical records. Adhering to protocols for patient identification and applying identification bracelets correctly. Registering patients during system downtimes by following established procedures and entering data promptly once the system is available.
Collecting and explaining copies of insurance cards, identification forms, and obtaining signatures on all required documentation. Verifying information on relevant accounts to ensure proper insurance coordination of benefits, and obtaining pre-certifications or prior authorizations when necessary. Completing the Medicare Secondary Payer (MSP) questionnaire when applicable.
Verifying insurance details to ascertain coordination of benefits and securing necessary authorizations or referrals.
Screening for and processing non-covered services and waivers of liability (ABN) through automated systems at the time of service.
Informing self-pay patients about their financial responsibilities, prepayment requirements, and coordinating the screening of alternative funding sources when applicable. Preparing estimates for procedures and calculating advance payment requirements based on previous or outstanding debts and current balances. Referring potentially eligible patients to financial counseling and/or eligibility vendors. Collaborating with clinical departments and other ancillary services to obtain accurate orders to set patient financial expectations.
Collecting patient payments and issuing accurate receipts. Posting all payments in the system and reconciling receipts with cash collected, completing necessary balancing forms.
Documenting patient account notes for all interactions and transactions.
Maintaining departmental and/or individual work queues and reports as required.
Addressing patient billing inquiries and interpreting statement data to resolve account issues.
Escalating unresolved account issues as necessary. Updating the emergency department room tracking system.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent preferred
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail required
  • At least one (1) year of experience in the hospitality or service industry preferred
Physical Requirements:


Ability to interact effectively with others through oral and written communication. Operate computers and office equipment requiring dexterity. Vision to see and read computer monitors and documents. Capability to remain seated or standing for extended periods while performing tasks on a computer, telephone, or other equipment. May involve lifting and transporting objects and office supplies, as well as bending, kneeling, and reaching.
