Job Summary:

The Texas Department of Aging & Disability Services is seeking a skilled and compassionate Direct Care RN to join our team at the State Supported Living Centers. As a Direct Care RN, you will play a vital role in providing high-quality nursing care to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities who reside in our centers.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide routine level nursing work, including assessment, care, and treatment of individuals in a State Supported Living Center setting.
  • Evaluate, treat, and document healthcare needs and/or issues, and report needs and/or issues to the appropriate person(s).
  • Communicate effectively with direct care staff, physicians, administration, and other nursing staff to ensure optimal care as part of the interdisciplinary team.
  • Notify the supervisor and PCP of trends and concerns to ensure consistent, high-quality care for all individuals served.
  • Complete data entry, required documentation, and reports, and maintain records.
  • Assist with services provided by LVNs and Certified Medication Aides (CMA), as needed, and make recommendations for improvements.
  • Participate in facility quality assurance/quality improvement (QA/QI) initiatives, as required.
  • Respond to emergency situations to ensure safety and care of individuals and staff.
Requirements:
  • Knowledge of nursing techniques and procedures, health care laws and regulations, medical diagnoses and procedures, accepted medical treatment programs, and community health and nursing care principles, practices, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of state and federal laws and Intermediate Care Facility for individuals with intellectual disabilities (ICF-IID) rules, regulations, policy, and procedures related to State Supported Living Center or ability to quickly gain that knowledge.
  • Knowledge of nursing care standards, the Settlement Agreement, and the Healthcare Guidelines or ability to quickly gain the knowledge.
  • Skills in the care and treatment of patients, use of computer/software, and an electronic health record system.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present ideas clearly and concisely in both written and oral communications.
  • Ability to provide patient care, prepare and maintain records, interpret policies and procedures, interpret health care regulations, and recognize patterns of medical necessity treatment.
Working Conditions:

This position may be eligible to earn additional pay for work performed on evenings, nights, and/or weekends. The state of Texas offers many benefits to employees, including excellent health benefits, a lifetime monthly retirement annuity, and (k) and Programs under the Employees Retirement System of Texas.
