Position Overview:
Under the guidance of the School Principal, the English Language Arts Educator is responsible for engaging students in mastering essential English language arts competencies. This role emphasizes nurturing critical thinking skills, utilizing diverse and relevant texts, prioritizing student voices, and promoting writing as a key analytical tool. The educator will implement a shared curriculum aligned with state standards and tailor lesson plans to meet the diverse learning needs of all students, including those with disabilities and English Language Learners.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develops academically rigorous, standards-aligned, and culturally relevant lesson plans that encourage critical thinking and prepare students for future academic challenges.
  • Employs student-centered instructional strategies to engage learners and differentiate teaching methods based on individual student needs.
  • Utilizes common curriculum resources and frameworks to ensure consistency across educational levels from kindergarten through high school.
  • Collaborates with Special Education and English as a New Language teachers to support diverse learners through tailored instructional approaches.
  • Analyzes assessment data to refine teaching practices and enhance student achievement.
  • Maintains effective classroom management and adheres to school-wide policies to foster a safe and orderly learning environment.
  • Establishes a classroom culture that promotes respect, inclusion, and a passion for learning while holding all students to high academic standards.
  • Evaluates student work, provides constructive feedback, and communicates progress to families through online systems.
  • Actively engages with students to understand their strengths and challenges, effectively communicating these insights with families.
  • Participates in ongoing professional development and collaborative learning communities.
  • Shares best practices with colleagues through participation in professional learning communities and cross-school initiatives.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred.
  • New York State Teaching Certification in English Language Arts (grades 5-9 or 7-12), Literacy (grades 5-12), or Childhood Education (grades 1-6).
  • Prior teaching experience in urban settings is preferred.
  • Dual certification in English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) or Students with Disabilities is advantageous.
  • Completion of fingerprint clearance and background checks as mandated by the NYS Department of Education.
