Job Summary

This is a National Guard position that requires membership in the Illinois National Guard and military grade listed in the announcement. The selected candidate will be required to wear the military uniform and accept the requirements as a condition of employment.

Responsibilities
  • Inspect, repair, modify, and service aircraft systems, components, and assemblies, both on- and off-aircraft.
  • Examine and inspect aircraft components, including landing gear, hydraulic systems, and deicers to locate cracks, breaks, leaks, or other problems.
  • Conduct routine and special inspections as required by regulations.
  • Inspect completed work to certify that maintenance meets standards and that aircraft are ready for operation.
  • Read and interpret maintenance manuals, service bulletins, and other specifications to determine the feasibility and method of repairing or replacing malfunctioning or damaged components.
  • Maintain repair logs, documenting all preventive and corrective aircraft maintenance.
  • Obtain fuel and oil samples and check them for contamination.
  • Disassemble equipment to inspect for deficiencies.
  • Communicate with coworkers to coordinate installations or repairs.
  • Test mechanical equipment to ensure proper functioning.
  • Measure parts for wear, using precision instruments.
  • Replace or repair worn, defective, or damaged components, using hand tools, gauges, and testing equipment.
  • Clean equipment, parts, or tools to repair or maintain them in good working order.
Requirements
  • Must possess experience or training that has provided the skills to remove and replace aircraft parts, accessories, and components, and to make adjustments and settings according to established specifications.
  • Skilled in the use of hand tools and test equipment.
  • Must possess specialized experience which includes experience or training installing, adjusting, aligning, troubleshooting and functionally testing the various major and minor mechanical and pneudraulic systems on an aircraft during overhaul or modification.
  • Experience coordinating the work of other mechanics, and scheduling maintenance to ensure completion of critical actions and optimum workflow.
  • Ability to instruct lower graded mechanics, military and other personnel in the disassembly and reassembly of crash damaged engines, transmissions, gearboxes, hydraulic components, and fuel controls sufficient for the exhibit to be returned to its shipping container.
  • Must possess experience with the use of common hand tools to make mechanical repairs.
  • Experience removing and installing aircraft parts, components and accessories with detailed guidance.
  • Experience in following detailed instructions in making routine, reoccurring repairs and modifications to aircraft parts, subassemblies and components.
Qualifications

The selected candidate must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone. No substitution of education for experience is permitted for this occupational series and grade.

Additional Information

The selected candidate will be required to register under the Military Selective Service Act if they are a male applicant who was born after 12/31/1959.
