Position Summary: The Heavy Equipment Operator position serves as an essential entry point to a fulfilling career in the construction and upkeep of our nation's Power Grid. You will collaborate with your team to construct, repair, and maintain overhead electrical distribution systems.
Job Duties: As a Heavy Equipment Operator, your responsibilities will include:

Physical Aspects: The physical demands outlined here are typical of those that must be met by a team member to successfully perform the essential functions of their role in powerline construction. While executing the duties of this position, team members are regularly required to communicate effectively. Frequent activities include standing, walking, using hands for various tasks, and reaching with hands and arms. Team members may also need to perform strenuous physical labor, sit, climb various structures, and maintain balance, as well as stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Lifting or moving items weighing over 50 lbs is common. Specific vision abilities required for this role include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Work Environment: While performing the duties of this job, team members may frequently encounter fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts, and vibrations. Exposure to a variety of extreme conditions at construction sites is common, and the noise level in the work environment can be loud. Powerline construction work is primarily conducted outdoors and is subject to diverse weather conditions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Safely executing new construction, maintenance, or repair work on energized and de-energized overhead systems
- Conducting thorough inspections of rubber goods and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Understanding when to utilize personal protective equipment
- Stringing overhead wire
- Setting poles and anchors
- Assisting with the installation of transformers, lightning arrestors, cutouts, cross-arms, insulators, switches, and switchgear
- Helping to replace fuses in transformers and clear faulted circuits and systems
- Working with energized high voltage systems while prioritizing safety
- Maintaining company vehicles, equipment, and tools in optimal condition
- Performing rigorous physical labor as required
- Utilizing company radios effectively
- Understanding basic rigging, hand lines, and lineman knot tying
- Maintaining knowledge of materials used in line work
- Identifying primary and secondary voltage on circuits
- Familiarity with induced voltage
- Assisting with the installation and connection of single-phase transformers
- Capable of performing basic bucket rescue/escape procedures
- Understanding equipment setup and grounding principles
- Working at heights and/or in confined spaces
- Recognizing minimum approach distances
- Understanding excavation and shoring requirements
- Checking voltage on transformers
- Installing and removing service connections
- Climbing various structures and possessing the necessary tools
- Using Kellum grips appropriately
- Identifying different materials used in line work
- Working outdoors, often in inclement weather
- Completing all other related tasks as required to fulfill job responsibilities
General Expectations:
- Possession of a Commercial Driver's License Class A is preferred.
- Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively.
- Willingness to travel long distances on short notice when necessary.
- Able to work for extended periods in various locations as required.
- Capability to lift over 50 lbs.
- Open to working overtime when requested.
