PRIMARY FUNCTION:
The Wastewater Operations Supervisor oversees the operational and maintenance activities of designated wastewater treatment facilities.
SUPERVISION:
This role operates under the general oversight of the shift manager or operations supervisor.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provides direct supervision to the operations and maintenance personnel.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Directs and mentors operational and maintenance staff as necessary.
- Evaluates performance to ensure compliance with safety and efficiency standards for uninterrupted wastewater transport and treatment services.
- Coordinates and engages in the operational and maintenance tasks of facilities, including chemical feed systems, grit collection, sludge management, gas monitoring, and calibration of related equipment.
- Manages the operation of treatment processing units, including settling tanks and disinfection systems.
- Collaborates with other supervisors and management regarding operational and maintenance conditions.
- Oversees the operation of pumping equipment, disinfection systems, and storage facilities.
- Coordinates preventive maintenance and addresses corrective maintenance with the operations team.
- Maintains operational records and prepares reports with observations and recommendations.
- Conducts regular inspections to assess facility conditions.
- Utilizes specialized software for work planning and inventory management.
- Works with engineers to enhance designs for operational tasks.
- Ensures quality control of samples and performs laboratory analyses as needed.
- Prepares work orders for maintenance activities using management systems.
- Supervises field crews and operational personnel as required.
- Operates process control systems and coordinates equipment shutdowns and startups.
- Ensures cleanliness of the plant and supervises staff maintenance activities.
- Provides training and guidance to team members.
- Responds to emergencies and directs necessary actions.
- Assists employees with procurement of tools and materials.
- Operates vehicles for transporting materials and equipment.
- Performs light maintenance tasks and inspections of various systems.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES:
- Assists in preparing safety reports and maintenance requests.
- Maintains positive labor relations through adherence to policies and agreements.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or GED with foundational skills in reading, writing, and mathematics.
- Five to seven years of experience in wastewater or water treatment operations, with at least three years in a supervisory role.
- Completion of a supervisory training program may substitute for some supervisory experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Familiarity with wastewater treatment methods and operations.
- Ability to effectively train and manage staff.
- Extensive knowledge of safety practices in wastewater operations.
- Understanding of groundwater monitoring and sludge management procedures.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Valid Massachusetts Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator's Grade 4 license.
- Valid Collections System IV certification.
- Valid Class D Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator License.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Employees may work in various conditions, including outdoor environments and near mechanical parts. The noise level may vary from loud in field settings to moderate in office settings.
