About the RoleWe are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Exhibition Curator to join our team at ACCESS (MI). As a key member of our museum staff, you will be responsible for developing and implementing innovative permanent and temporary exhibits that showcase the history and culture of the Arab American community.
Key Responsibilities- Exhibit Development: Oversee the maintenance and upkeep of our core, temporary, and traveling exhibitions, ensuring they are engaging, informative, and meet the highest standards of quality.
- Strategic Planning: Develop and implement the museum's exhibit strategy and vision, aligning with our goals and objectives.
- Collaboration and Teamwork: Work closely with our museum team to implement updates to and renovation of our core galleries, ensuring seamless execution and effective communication.
- Project Management: Lead and manage the exhibit development process, from concept to installation, including budgeting, scheduling, contracting, and evaluation.
- Community Engagement: Collaborate with museum staff to develop or enhance existing events and programs for our diverse stakeholders and audiences to engage with featured exhibitions and our core galleries.
- Artist Collaboration: Work with exhibiting artists to help shape and implement their artistic vision and exhibit design.
- Networking and Partnerships: Network with other institutions to host traveling exhibits as well as to send our proprietary exhibits for viewing in other venues.
- Content Creation: Collaborate with our Curatorial, Research, and Content teams to write exhibit scripts, labels, and other educational materials.
- Grant Writing and Reporting: Assist with grant writing and reporting for exhibit projects, as assigned.
- Departmental Management: Prepare and manage departmental budget, plan, assign, monitor, and manage the work of others, review performance, and evaluate results achieved by subordinates.
- Leadership and Mentorship: Oversee, coach, and mentor subordinates, lead tours of exhibitions as needed, and represent the museum in professional networks and forums related to exhibits and museology.
- Research and Best Practices: Research and apply best practices and emerging trends in exhibit design, interpretation, and evaluation, and research artists, historical figures, and events, objects, and themes in preparation for exhibitions.
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Arab American Studies, Museum Studies, Exhibit Design, Middle Eastern Studies, or a related field; Master's degree preferred.
- Experience: At least 5 years of experience in a museum setting or any equivalent combination of experience, education, and/or training approved by Human Resources.
