Sign Language Interpreter Job Description

We are seeking a skilled Sign Language Interpreter to provide American Sign Language (ASL) interpreting services for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing students, faculty, and staff in various settings. The ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills, be able to work independently, and possess a strong understanding of Deaf culture and community.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Interpret ASL in various settings, including classrooms, laboratories, and meetings.
  • Consult with faculty to identify potential problems and provide guidance on effective communication strategies.
  • Advocate for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing students and faculty in difficult or stressful situations.
  • Stay up-to-date with current developments, trends, and techniques in the field of interpreting.
Requirements:
  • Associate degree in education, social services, or a related field, or graduation from an Interpreter Training Program.
  • At least one year of interpreting experience in an educational setting.
  • Valid California driver's license and ability to maintain insurability under the District's vehicle insurance program.
Working Environment:

The work environment is typical of a classroom setting, with occasional exposure to outside weather conditions and moving equipment. The employee may be required to travel to locations other than the assigned work site and adjust to work schedule changes and requirements to work overtime.

This is a continuous recruitment, and applications will be reviewed and processed as needed. The assessment process includes a performance assessment, and passing score is 75% out of 100%. Candidates who are unsuccessful in an assessment will be eligible to retest after 90 calendar days.
