Job Title: GIS Specialist

About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled GIS Specialist to join our team in Chesapeake. As a key member of our Information Technology Department, you will play a crucial role in supporting the city-wide broadband implementation and operation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Digitize and attribute telecommunications system facilities using ESRI ArcGIS 10.8.x or ArcGIS Pro.
  • Review and interpret utility as-built drawings for accuracy and to identify current routes and splice points.
  • Keep data current using as-built drawings and field operation feedback.
  • Quality control spatial locations and facilities attributes adhering to defined requirements.
  • Create processes and tools for mobile use of GIS for data collection and consumption.
  • Analyze GIS data sets and build ad-hoc reporting for leadership.

Requirements

VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT: A bachelor's degree in geographic information systems or a closely related field is required.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT: A minimum of four years of related, full-time equivalent experience is required.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.

Preferred Qualifications

  • ArcGIS 10.6.x or higher and/or ArcGIS Pro training/education is preferred.
  • Ability to review and compare various information sources.
  • Knowledge of telecommunications facility data is preferred.
  • Experience in mapping OSP construction, fiber construction, or utility (gas, water, electricity) construction.
  • Familiar with Microsoft Office products (Outlook, Word, Excel).
  • Good communication (verbal and written) and listening skills.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, problem-solving, and time-management skills.
  • Self-motivation, adaptability, and ability to meet deadlines.
