Job Summary

This position is responsible for the accurate administration of medications to residents at Horizons Residential Care. The Medication Technician will work closely with the nursing staff to ensure that medications are dispensed in a timely and accurate manner.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Prepare and dispense medications to residents in an accurate and timely manner.
  2. Accurately document all medications administered on the Medication Administration Record (MAR).
  3. Perform medication check-off with the incoming shift nurse or medication administrator.
  4. Report any discrepancies in the MAR and/or medication check-off.
  5. Respond to emergency situations.
  6. Communicate with physicians and dentists regarding client needs and follow-up.
  7. Assist nursing staff with the preparation of various feeding equipment and formulas prescribed for individual clients.
  8. Assist the Director of Nursing and Nutritionist with regular weighing, monthly and measuring height, quarterly for all clients.
  9. Assist the nursing department with the compilation of requisition forms, inventories, ordering, checking, and storing all medical supplies.
  10. Complete resident monthly summaries on a rotating basis as assigned.
  11. Perform other duties as necessary or as assigned by the nurse or supervisor.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to lift, push, pull, and move forty (40) pounds in performing various client movements with the possibility of client resistance.
  • Full range of motion (above the head, to the side, front, and back) is required with hands, arms, and shoulders.
  • Should be able to operate under the following outside conditions associated with field trips and other recreational outings: heat, cold, wind, grass/weeds, sun, etc.
  • Should be able to safely handle various cleaning supplies, blood/airborne pathogens, and other potentially dangerous materials.
  • Must possess the properties of awareness/peripheral vision, average hearing, average stamina, and adequate balance and agility in order to provide constant care and support to clients.
  • Must be able to stand for extended periods of time and go up and down stairs.
  • Must be able to kneel, stoop, bend, and push, i.e., operating wheelchairs, lifts, tilt tables, etc.
  • Hand, wrist, and finger mobility as well as eye-hand coordination is needed, i.e., placing tubes for tube feedings, fastening slings to mechanical lifts, etc.
  • Must possess adequate communication abilities with clear speech, i.e., providing vocal reinforcement for specific client behavior, etc.
  • Should possess an average sense of smell for detecting any changes in the environment which might signal the need for action, i.e., changing a client's diaper.

Full-time Overnight: 7:00 PM - 7:00 AM

2nd Shift: 2:45 PM - 11:15 PM
