NC United States ECU Health Medical Center Full time
About ECU Health Medical Center:

ECU Health Medical Center is a 974-bed academic medical center in North Carolina, serving as the primary teaching hospital for The Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University. As a flagship hospital for ECU Health, it provides acute and intermediate care, rehabilitation, and outpatient health services to a 29-county region with over 1.4 million residents.

Job Summary:

Under the Clinical Supervision of the Medical Director of Respiratory Care and the overall supervision of the Manager, Assistant Manager, and Respiratory Care Supervisor, the Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) II functions in a safe, expedient, and cost-effective manner in providing, responding to patient needs, and documenting respiratory care and services provided. The RCP II is involved in the Clinical Ladder program, a voluntary promotion system recognizing healthcare professionals demonstrating advanced knowledge, critical thinking skills, and professional development.

Responsibilities:

1. The RCP II assesses the appropriateness of prescribed respiratory care by acquiring and evaluating clinical data, and assessing the cardiopulmonary/overall status of the patient based on age. They initiate a respiratory care plan upon admission to Respiratory Services, identifying primary respiratory problems, goals, and interventions. The plan is updated at least once per shift relative to progress toward the goal. The RCP II initiates respiratory care, evaluates and monitors patients' responses, modifies prescribed therapy, and participates in life-support activities as required.

2. The RCP II provides and records patient and family education in the patient medical record, providing and assessing information from respiratory parameter studies, peak flow measurements, pulse oximetry monitoring, ABG/VBG/CBG results, capnography, pulmonary mechanics/graphics monitors, hemodynamic monitoring, and cardiac output monitoring.

3. The RCP II incorporates department protocol-driven care to direct clinical practice, using universal precautions appropriately, performing proper hand washing between patients, maintaining confidentiality, and using department scripts to communicate with other departments, patients, families, coworkers, and students. They demonstrate safe operation of all equipment in compliance with department policy, safety, disinfection, infection control, and quality control standards, and demonstrate effective computer skills for electronic charting, billing, and respiratory order processing.

4. As directed by the supervisor, the RCP II may have additional responsibility as a charge therapist and/or preceptor for students and/or new employees. They participate in Inservice Education, Patient Rounds/Conferences, and obtain 24 education contact hours per year, actively participating on the Respiratory Action Team of their choice, and maintaining active membership with the NBRC and AARC/NCSRC. The RCP II completes and maintains all Clinical Ladder requirements, participating in CQI activities.
