Key Responsibilities- Leadership and Management: Provide strategic leadership and management to the gorilla department, ensuring that our team members are equipped to provide exceptional care and husbandry to our animals.
- Animal Care: Ensure the daily cleaning, feeding, and care of zoo animals, including medical treatments, food preparation, and maintenance of enclosures.
- Department Operations: Develop and maintain SOPs for assigned area(s) that align with AZA and USDA requirements, and ensure that all department records are accurate and up-to-date.
- Team Development: Support the creation of a cohesive team, demonstrating organizational, planning, delegation, mentoring, and coaching skills.
- Communication: Communicate effectively in writing and orally with management, team members, interns, volunteers, and guests.
- Collaboration: Work collaboratively to develop and maintain animal training, enrichment, and wellbeing programs.
- Safety and Security: Focus on the safety of staff, guests, and animals, performing regular exhibit integrity checks and highlighting safe practices.
- Compliance: Uphold all company policies as outlined in the Standard Operating Procedures, Team Member Handbook, and Code of Business Conduct.
- Education: Bachelor's degree in wildlife management, zoology, biology, or related field.
- Experience: Five years of experience with great apes (gorillas is preferable), and three years of supervisory experience.
- Skills: Excellent observation skills, ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, and basic knowledge of research techniques and practices.
- Personal Qualities: Self-motivated team player, efficient and solution-oriented, with the ability to establish and maintain effective rapport with all levels of management, team members, interns, volunteers, and guests.
