Neighborhood Legal Services Inc. is seeking a dedicated Staff Attorney for its Family Law Unit. This role involves providing legal representation to individuals navigating the complexities of family law, including matters related to matrimonial issues, child custody, support, and domestic violence.
The selected attorney will manage a diverse caseload, engage in legal research and writing, maintain client communications, and represent clients in court proceedings, trials, and hearings. Additionally, the attorney will participate in community outreach efforts and collaborate with various stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities:
- Acquire in-depth knowledge of family law practices.
- Offer a range of legal services to individuals affected by domestic violence and living in poverty, from legal advice to full representation in court.
- Identify systemic issues impacting clients within the family law sector and work towards solutions through advocacy and policy initiatives.
- Coordinate with NLS staff and community partners to facilitate effective referrals and comprehensive service delivery.
- Engage in community education and outreach activities.
- Build partnerships with public and private organizations to enhance service integration and address barriers faced by clients.
- Exhibit cultural competency while working with diverse, low-income clients.
- Regularly communicate with support staff and supervisors to ensure efficient case management.
Core Competencies:
- Strong work ethic with the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines independently.
- Exceptional writing and editing skills, with a keen attention to detail.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and a collaborative approach to teamwork.
- Cultural humility and sensitivity in working with diverse populations.
- Familiarity with various communities is advantageous.
Qualifications:
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) and membership in the New York State Bar (pending membership is acceptable).
- Experience working with low-income or underserved populations is preferred.
- Fluency in a second language is a plus.
- Background in legal services or knowledge of civil legal matters is preferred.
Working Conditions:
- Shared office environment with responsibilities including computer use and attendance at meetings.
- Travel for off-site meetings and hearings may be required.
Compensation and Benefits:
The salary range for this position is $60,387 to $98,981 annually, based on experience and in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement. This is a full-time role with a standard 35-hour work week and shorter hours during the summer.
NLS offers a comprehensive benefits package, including health, dental, and vision insurance, three weeks of vacation, twelve paid holidays, and a paid week off between Christmas and New Year's. Additional benefits include sick and personal leave, eligibility for public student loan forgiveness, life insurance, a pension plan, and flexible spending accounts.
