Job Title: Industrial Hygienist

SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory is seeking a highly motivated Health and Safety Specialist to join our Environment, Safety, and Health (ES&H) Division.

Job Summary:

The successful candidate will be responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining a broad range of industrial hygiene and safety programs. This includes administering, assessing, and improving programs, and serving as a subject matter expert in support of operations at the Laboratory.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Manage one or more specific ES&H topic programs, including asbestos, beryllium, lead, silica, cryogens/cryogenic equipment, chemical exposure assessments, fume hoods, gases: compressed/hazardous/toxic, noise/hearing conservation, non-ionizing radiation, respiratory protection, etc.
  • Support projects to ensure that they meet requirements; work with stakeholders to find the best solution to safety problems while enabling the team to meet the project schedule and budget.
  • Develop and deliver safety training for programs that they manage.
  • Effectively interface and collaborate with all levels of staff including technicians, principal investigators, and operational support teams.
  • Under limited supervision, perform moderately complex technical work in a wide range of environmental, health, and safety disciplines to ensure a safe work environment and to achieve compliance with SLAC's Environment, Safety and Health Program and governmental regulatory requirements.
  • Identify, assess, and monitor workplace hazards (including but not limited to, chemical, physical, biological, and radiological) that could be present in the work area; remediate hazards, and/or recommend improvements to minimize hazard potential.
  • Recommend improvements in processes, design, procedures, and operating equipment to minimize hazard potential.
  • Provide technical advice and interpretation of various government regulations and SLAC policies; maintain working knowledge of specific government regulations.
  • Coordinate in-house asbestos worker training. Provide Lead Hazcom and Lead worker training.
  • Manage the transfer of an existing asbestos database to a new platform.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree and three years progressively responsible experience in industrial hygiene, occupational safety and health, emergency response/management, environmental science, and/or allied/scientific field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Practical knowledge of Cal/OSHA laws, regulations, and policies.
  • Capable of identifying known potential exposures and recommending corrective action.
  • Computer skills and familiarity with the Microsoft Office suite.
  • Management, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct effective health and safety surveys, quantitative and qualitative exposure/risk assessments, and data analyses; ability to provide recommendations for exposure/risk control.
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with diverse audiences; ability to explain technical concepts clearly and concisely.
  • Ability to maintain current knowledge of and interpret specific government agency requirements (statutes, regulations, licenses, and permits) and university policies.
  • Working knowledge of the scientific and technical aspects of various regulatory requirements and potential impact on assigned work area(s).
  • Successfully interface and collaborate with all levels of staff including technicians, principal investigators, and operational support teams.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Industrial hygiene, asbestos program management, Lead program management, IH sampling, familiarity with the ASTM E Standard Practice for Comprehensive Building Asbestos Surveys.
  • Experience in an academic or laboratory research environment.
Certifications and Licenses:
  • Hold or is actively working to obtain initial professional certifications (e.g., Associate Safety Professional (ASP), Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), AHERA certifications, CADPH Lead inspector/Assessor Project Monitor).

The expected pay range for this position is $116,115 - $134,567 per annum. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position.

The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location, and external market pay for comparable jobs.
