Job Summary

The Medical Support Specialist will provide daily support of medical/clinical appointments, medication ordering, and medication passes. This role will also involve scheduling of appointments, participating in Kelberman activities, and completing required documentation. The successful candidate will provide leadership to AMAPs and support the overall success of the residential program.

Key Responsibilities
  • Scheduling and participation in medication administration passes, tube feeding, diabetic injections, and ordering of medication.
  • Scheduling and participation in medical/clinical appointments within IRA.
  • Overseeing the safety and well-being of program participants.
  • Overseeing and maintaining medical/administrative equipment and supplies.
  • Participating in activities as part of the treatment team, including meetings, appointments, trainings, and committees.
  • Maintaining documentation as required.
  • Reviewing doctor's orders as assigned.
  • Providing oversight (under direction of RN) of Medication Administration Record.
  • Training and performing special skills like Tube Feeding, Choking Prevention, and Diabetic Care/Injections as licensing allows.
  • Training staff on CPR (American Red Cross) use of AED's, First Aid, and Epi-pens as appropriate.
  • Teaching infection control and Food Consistencies as appropriate.
  • Teaching and promoting safe patient handling techniques.
  • Reviewing and acting on incident reports and providing necessary re-training for staff.
  • Providing 'on-call' medication administration and tube feed coverage as needed.
  • Providing quality oversight of medical duties, documentation, treatments, and follow-up.
  • Performing quality checks amongst all IRAs once per week (unless otherwise advised).
  • Following (and adjusting with supervisor) CSS Checklist on daily, weekly, monthly, and annual checklist/responsibilities.
  • Establishing a work environment that creates positive communication between supervisors and employees and assimilating new employees to the Agency's culture, values, and mission.
  • Ensuring compliance with all pertinent government and agency regulations and operating standards.
  • Maintaining and regularly compiling data and documentation to be reviewed by supervisor as required.
  • Adhering to mandatory reporting requirements and HIPAA laws.
  • Promoting a work environment that creates positive communication between supervisors and employees and assimilating new employees to the Agency's culture, values, and mission.
  • Ensuring compliance with all pertinent government and agency regulations and operating standards.
  • Maintaining and regularly compiling data and documentation to be reviewed by supervisor as required.
  • Contributing to a positive work environment through collaborative team work and positive communication in alignment with the Kelberman's culture, values, and mission.
  • Demonstrating excellent work attendance by being punctual and reliable for all scheduled shifts and meetings.
  • Ensuring compliance with all pertinent government and agency regulations and operating standards.
  • Adhering to mandatory reporting requirements and HIPAA laws.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Work Environment and Physical Demands
  • Job-related tasks may involve possible exposure to blood, body fluids, tissue, or spills or splashes from these substances. May have exposure to unpredictable individuals and situations when working at Kelberman sites.
  • OSHA exposure category l.
  • The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, and sit. Must be able to remain in a stationary position for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to bend, twist, reach.
  • Must have the ability to lift up to 50 pounds.

Education Requirements/Qualifications/Experience
  • A.A.S. Degree or High School plus Specialized Trade Certificate.
  • Valid NYS Licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse and current NYS Registration Certificate preferred.
  • Basic Computer Skills (Windows, Outlook, Adobe Acrobat, Word, Excel).
  • This position has regular and substantial unsupervised or unrestricted physical contact with individuals receiving services and is required by law to be fingerprinted for a criminal history record check under OPWDD (Office for People with Developmental Disabilities).
  • Travel and transport is required.
  • Must have a valid NYS Driver's License and require reliable transportation.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed above may be substituted for the above education and experience requirements.
