Position Overview

The Wound Care Registered Nurse plays a crucial role in delivering specialized care for patients with various wound and ostomy needs. This position involves comprehensive management of patients with conditions such as abdominal stomas, wounds, fistulas, drains, pressure ulcers, and incontinence. The nurse will also be responsible for various administrative tasks, including budget management and supply oversight, as well as providing education and consultation.

This role requires the nurse to care for a diverse patient population, including neonates, children, adolescents, adults, and the elderly, each presenting unique medical challenges. Our patients come from various family structures and cultural backgrounds, and the nurse will engage with in-patients, out-patients, and home care clients.

Key Responsibilities
  • Act as a resource for nursing and professional staff, educating patients and families on the management of wound, ostomy, and continence issues.
  • Provide pre-operative education and stoma-site marking for patients scheduled for ostomy procedures.
  • Deliver training to healthcare professionals on topics related to ostomy care, wound management, and skin care associated with incontinence.
  • Collaborate with Supply Chain to select appropriate supplies for wound and ostomy care services.
  • Maintain clinical expertise by attending professional conferences, meeting with suppliers, and reviewing current literature.
  • Utilize the nursing process to assess patient needs and prioritize care.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate individualized patient care plans, adjusting as necessary in consultation with the primary nurse.
  • Communicate effectively with patients and families, documenting pertinent information and coordinating with other healthcare team members.
  • Respond appropriately to emergencies and initiate necessary nursing actions.
  • Execute physician orders and ensure continuity of care to adapt to changing patient needs.
  • Document patient information in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Employ time management strategies to enhance care delivery.
  • Identify changes in patient status through careful assessment.
  • Demonstrate evidence-based practice by presenting relevant research during performance evaluations.
Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is required.
  • A minimum of one to three years of nursing experience is essential for providing effective care and training in wound and ostomy management.

Licensure and Certifications:

  • Must hold a current Registered Nurse license.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required upon hire.
  • After two years in wound care, the nurse must pursue certification in a relevant specialty area (e.g., COCN, CWCN, CWOCN, CWON).
