Job Title: Benefit Programs Specialist II
Job Summary: We are seeking a highly skilled Benefit Programs Specialist II to join our team at the Virginia Department of Social Services. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for determining and re-determining the eligibility of individuals and families for financial assistance, SNAP, medical assistance, and other social services benefit programs.
Key Responsibilities:
- Determine and re-determine eligibility for financial assistance, SNAP, medical assistance, and other social services benefit programs
- Interview clients to gather information and assess their eligibility
- Process applications for financial assistance and diversion
- Determine benefit levels using automated systems and manual methods
- Interpret policies and procedures applicable to various programs
- Monitor cases for changes in recipient circumstances and implement changes as needed
- Evaluate employability status of clients and explore potential sources of income
- Explain client responsibilities, rights, and program availability
- Refer clients to service workers as needed
- Prepare reports and maintain client records
- Identify possible fraud and make appropriate referrals
- Evaluate consistency and completeness of data secured and substantiate accuracy as needed
Requirements:
- Working knowledge of practices of public service organizations, economic and basic human behavior, financial assistance programs, and eligibility requirements for social service assistance
- Mathematics skills to calculate percentages, formulas, and averages
- Interviewing techniques, including data collection and investigation
- Ability to communicate effectively with a broad spectrum of individuals, including customers, employers, courts, and medical professionals
- High school diploma supplemented with experience in benefit programs, use of computer software and hardware, and completion of required Benefit Programs training
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior experience in benefit programs and completion of required Benefit Programs training
- Experience with agency-related software
- Bilingual in English and Spanish
Special Requirements:
- Applicants may be subject to a Criminal History Background search, Central Registry search, DMV/driving record check, and/or fingerprinting
- Employee must be willing to work in a community emergency shelter in the event of a natural disaster or emergency
