POSITION OVERVIEW
Under general supervision, the role involves conducting maintenance, repairs, and/or replacements of mechanical and electrical systems within substantial public structures or areas, which may include detention facilities. The incumbent may be tasked with providing technical guidance to a team on specific assignments and will be expected to work rotating shifts, including weekends.
The ideal candidate will possess expertise in the repair of electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and various other building systems/equipment within commercial or multi-building campus environments. Strong customer service skills and the ability to comprehend, implement, and adhere to established policies and procedures are essential.
Furthermore, the successful applicant will be self-driven and demonstrate a proven ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with others, functioning as a team player. Proficiency in utilizing computer-based maintenance record-keeping systems is also required.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
The responsibilities of this position may include, but are not limited to:
- Inspecting, repairing, and/or replacing plumbing connections, seals, water and sewer lines, valves, lavatory and shower fixtures, hot water heaters, water softeners, drinking fountains, and centrifugal pumps.
- Examining, replacing, and/or repairing switches, lights, ballasts, circuit breakers, panel boxes, transformers, relays, electrical doors, and electrical controls.
- Operating various electrical metering devices, power snakes, threading machines, power tools, and other mechanical equipment.
- Overhauling and repairing low-pressure boilers, heat exchangers, refrigeration and ventilation systems, compressors, motors, fans, gauges, meters, and electro-mechanical and gear-operated cell doors.
- Maintaining records on equipment, services, and work hours expended using computer-based record-keeping systems.
- Performing minor welding, painting, and carpentry tasks.
- Responding to and investigating emergency calls at any time.
- Repairing and installing kitchen and laundry equipment, including steam kettles, ranges, ovens, fryers, refrigerators, dishwashers, and other related appliances.
- Inspecting elevators and associated safety equipment.
- Carrying out other related duties as assigned.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
A combination of training and experience in the maintenance and repair of mechanical and electrical equipment and systems is required, leading to the acquisition of the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities. A minimum of three (3) years of progressively responsible building maintenance experience, including the repair of minor electrical and mechanical systems and equipment, is preferred.
REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must possess a valid California driver’s license and must successfully complete thorough background investigations conducted by the Sheriff and Probation Departments prior to employment. Maintaining these clearances is a condition of employment.
Experience in maintenance and repair within large commercial, industrial, and/or campus-type settings is essential.
OTHER CONSIDERATIONS
This position may be subject to State Health Officer Orders regarding vaccine verification and/or testing, which are conditions of employment. Depending on the assignment and work location, candidates may be required to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 or request an exemption for qualifying medical or religious reasons during the onboarding process.
Highly desired qualifications include experience with boilers, pumps, and chillers, as well as exceptional customer service skills and the ability to understand and apply established policies and procedures.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Working knowledge of tools and materials used in general maintenance and repair of mechanical and electrical equipment, methods used in maintenance and minor repair of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, basic mathematics, current office computer systems, and safety precautions is required.
Skills to properly use and maintain power and hand tools, diagnose electrical or mechanical failures, work independently, and interpret blueprints are essential.
Ability to perform a variety of building maintenance and limited repair work in the electrical and mechanical trades, use standard tools, and follow instructions is necessary.

A written examination will be conducted to evaluate applicants' knowledge of general mechanics, plumbing, electrical systems, and safety protocols. A score of seventy percent (70%) or higher is required to qualify for placement on the eligible list.
Offers of employment may be conditional pending the successful completion of an on-site, proctored exam.
