About the Job

This position is part of the VA Loma Linda Healthcare System, Environmental Management Service (EMS). The Housekeeping Aid reports to the Housekeeping Aid Supervisor and plays a crucial role in the patient care experience at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform a full range of light and heavy cleaning duties and routine housekeeping tasks.
  • Work independently with general supervision or as part of a team to maintain cleanliness and organization in assigned areas.
  • Use various cleaning equipment and supplies to sanitize and disinfect surfaces, floors, and other areas.
  • Remove trash and recyclables, and transport them to central collection areas.
  • Clean restrooms, bathrooms, and shower rooms to meet acceptable standards.
  • Replenish supplies of paper towels, toilet paper, hand sanitizers, and soap in all areas.
  • Move and arrange furniture, patient wardrobes, beds, etc. to facilitate cleaning tasks.
  • Provide bed-making services in patient care areas and clean mattresses, springs, and bed frames.
  • Clean bedside stands, over-bed lights, blood pressure cuffs, bed tables, etc. in patient rooms.
  • Remove soiled textiles from patient rooms and transport them to the designated soiled room.
  • Load and unload clean textiles from bulk carts and restock clean textile closets, cabinets, shelves, carts, and participate in inventory management activities.
  • Defrost and clean patient care refrigerators and ice machines in nourishment kitchen areas.
  • Clean stainless steel on storage instrument cabinets and counters, elevators in lobbies, wards, diet-kitchens, and nurses' utility rooms.
  • Clean ashtrays, smoke stands, sand urns in designated smoke areas and water fountains.
  • Provide interim cleaning of windows and window ledges from the inside, clean glass door and other glass surfaces.
  • Replace curtains and clean blinds.
  • Clean needle boxes and, on occasion, replace them.
  • Periodically clean specific non-critical Reusable Medical Equipment (RME) in inpatient and clinical areas of the medical center.
Work Schedule and Requirements

Varying shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Must be physically able to do continuous walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, pulling, and pushing. Occasionally uses heavy powered cleaning equipment weighing over 50 pounds.

Requirements
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Subject to a background/suitability investigation.
  • May serve a probationary period.
  • Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
