Surgical Technician

Job Summary

As a member of the perioperative healthcare team, the surgical technician provides technical assistance to surgeons and charge nurses in the operating room. The surgical technician supports the surgeon during the surgical procedure by providing instrumentation and assistance, as well as being responsible for utilizing the surgical process, including surgical counts, hand-off communication, and time-out processes. The surgical technician effectively interacts with other disciplines to coordinate the patient's care while in the surgical environment.

Key Responsibilities

Provide technical assistance to surgeons and charge nurses in the operating room
Support the surgeon during surgical procedures by providing instrumentation and assistance
Utilize the surgical process, including surgical counts, hand-off communication, and time-out processes
Effectively interact with other disciplines to coordinate patient care

Requirements

Completion of an approved OR technician course
Ability to speak English
Demonstrated competence in the clinical setting
Basic Life Support certification (successful completion within three months of employment)

Working Conditions

The surgical technician works in a well-lit, ventilated, and air-conditioned area. The position requires long periods of standing, walking, stooping, heavy lifting, and bending. The surgical technician may be exposed to unpleasant odors, sights, and sounds, as well as risks of disease, infection, and physical strain. The position requires the ability to lift 50 pounds independently and may involve working all shifts, some weekends, and overtime.
