The role of the Intellectual Property Counsel is vital in the development and oversight of the organization's patent and trademark assets.
This position requires a solid understanding of electrical engineering principles alongside expertise in the patent and trademark landscape to generate high-quality patent submissions and trademarks, while also advising on strategic business initiatives. A background in electrical engineering, particularly in analog circuits and switched-mode power supply technology, is advantageous. Exceptional writing and editing capabilities in English are essential.
Key Responsibilities:
- Draft and manage domestic patent applications directly with the USPTO or in collaboration with external legal counsel.
- Oversee the drafting and prosecution of international patent applications with external partners.
- Formulate claims for both offensive and defensive patent strategies.
- Identify potential patentable technologies through collaboration with integrated circuit designers and applications engineers.
- Coordinate with paralegals and administrative personnel to submit patent and trademark applications along with necessary documentation to the USPTO.
- Evaluate the patent and trademark portfolio to assess advantages and costs, presenting findings to senior management.
- Conduct trademark clearance searches and analyses across domestic and international databases.
- Prepare, file, and manage U.S. trademark applications and oversee renewals with the USPTO.
- Organize and manage foreign trademark applications and maintain registrations in conjunction with legal counsel.
- Lead brand protection initiatives and work with internal teams to ensure compliance with brand standards and trademark usage.
- Draft and review demand letters, cease and desist communications, and amicable agreements.
Qualifications and Experience:
- J.D. from an accredited law institution and admission to the California state bar.
- Registered with the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
- B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in electrical engineering or a related technical discipline, demonstrating proficiency in analog electronic circuit theory and application.
- A minimum of 5 years of experience in patent and trademark prosecution.
- Highly developed technical writing and editing skills, showcasing a strong command of the English language.
- Experience in drafting patent applications is preferred; other relevant experience includes writing and editing for technical publications.
- Proficient in software tools such as Visio, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for document preparation including drawings, images, and text.
- Familiarity with Patent Center and electronic docketing systems, such as Foundation IP, is a valuable asset.
- Experience in constructing and evaluating circuits in a laboratory setting is desirable.
- Experience in designing off-line switched mode power supplies or knowledge of high voltage semiconductor device fabrication is a plus.
Power Integrations is dedicated to fostering innovation through diverse teams and considers various factors when determining compensation. The annual base salary range for this position is $133,472 - $200,456, influenced by role, level, qualifications, and work location.
The displayed range reflects the minimum and maximum target for new hire salaries for this position in California. Individual compensation within this range is influenced by job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
