ABOUT THIS ROLE:

EXPECTED SALARY RANGE: $109,263 - $169,358

WORK LOCATION: Apex, NC

SCHEDULE: Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm

WHAT YOU WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR:

An individual in this role will supervise and guide the Operations, Forestry, and Technical Services division of the Electric Utilities Department, ensuring alignment with the strategic objectives of the department. This position requires maintaining a comprehensive understanding of the Electric Utilities Director's activities.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Directs the management team (Operations, Forestry, and Technical Services) to ensure daily operations align with departmental goals.
  • Assumes the responsibilities of key management roles within the department, including acting as Director when necessary.
  • Facilitates communication between the Director and management team on significant organizational matters.
  • Leads the annual budget development process and ensures capital budget requests align with organizational objectives.
  • Creates long-term infrastructure strategies for the electric system to guarantee sufficient capacity.
  • Evaluates and proposes operational improvements to the Electric Director.
  • Plans, organizes, and oversees various contracted projects.
  • Collaborates with engineers and contractors on project coordination.
  • Consults with division managers regarding personnel matters.
  • Conducts staff meetings to keep employees informed about updates and project developments.
  • Regularly meets with subordinate supervisors to address complex issues, establish project priorities, and provide guidance.
  • Oversees special studies related to electric power delivery.
  • Engages with community members regarding complaints, assists staff with inquiries, and determines appropriate actions.
  • Prepares communication materials for citizens and attends necessary meetings.
  • Performs additional related duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS:

A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in a technical field, preferably electrical, along with a minimum of seven years of managerial experience in a public or municipal electric utility, including significant supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

REQUIRED SKILLS:
  • In-depth knowledge of electric engineering principles, practices, and procedures.
  • Comprehensive understanding of electric distribution administration, planning, and design.
  • Familiarity with construction materials, techniques, and methods for utility projects.
  • Knowledge of public contracting regulations in North Carolina.
  • Ability to interpret projects and prepare related designs, estimates, and specifications.
  • Capability to analyze complex engineering calculations and provide recommendations.
  • General understanding of management principles and practices.
  • Familiarity with governmental accounting, personnel, and procurement practices.
  • Ability to develop comprehensive operational policies and procedures.
  • Proficiency in preparing detailed technical reports.
  • Skill in supervising staff, including counseling, coaching, and conducting performance evaluations.
  • Ability to foster effective working relationships with officials, employees, contractors, and the public.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including presentation abilities.
