Janitorial Assistant

Job Summary:

This role supports the mission and work of the YMCA of Central New York, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization. The Janitorial Assistant is responsible for cleaning and maintaining assigned areas and/or facilities, ensuring a safe and healthy environment for participants and staff.

Key Responsibilities:

• Models the YMCA core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
• Develops and maintains positive relationships with individuals and groups at all levels of the organization.
• Maintains physical presence, always remains alert while on duty.
• Performs general cleaning and janitorial duties in common areas of the building.
• Assists in cleaning and sanitizing restrooms, fitness areas, and child care rooms.
• Performs limited grounds maintenance, such as mowing and trimming lawns and hedges, and cleaning snow from sidewalks.
• Ensures heating and cooling systems are operational.
• Maintains a neat and orderly janitors' room, ensuring cleaning and maintenance supplies are stocked.
• Washes windows.
• Assists in examining facilities/assigned areas for safety hazards, reporting deficiencies to their direct supervisor or on-site manager.

Requirements:

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Must pass a background check.
• Knowledge of safety hazards and proper use of various cleaning and sanitizing solutions.
• Detail-oriented and thorough.
• Ability to perform basic repairs and operate tools or equipment used in routine maintenance.
• Ability to interact with staff, members, participants, and visitors while remaining professional, polite, and courteous.

Trainings & Certifications:

• Must complete annual safety, combating sexual-harassment, and child abuse prevention trainings assigned by human resources prior to direct service.
• Must have current CPR and First Aid.
• Must take required safety trainings within first 30 days of employment.

Work Environment:

This role operates in a recreational and/or educational environment. The noise level in the work environment is moderate to high.
